Calamityjane1937,
Good advice from bolders! It all boils down to the individual, you say that you wake between 5.5-6.0, that is excellent, but do you maintain this level most of the day?
The mainstream advice is to eat a diet consisting of carbs, but there are some (myself included) that cannot control their diabetes on the RDA of carbs, therefore have cut-out most carbs, or reduced them like I have. Therefore, it is down to a few things, should you presently have good control of your diabetes on the diet you are on, and you are happy with the foods you eat, don't change anything, if you are struggling with your control, it may be worth your while experimenting and reduce your carb intake to a level where you can maintain good control; the choice is all yours!
Hope this helps clarify things!
