Advice from my DB nurse

I am so puzzled, the DB nurse at the hospital and my DB nurse at the health centre encourage me to eat plenty of Carbs. Then I come on here and it's just the opposite. I am type 2, and my waking bg count is usually 5.5-6.0 I take 1 metformin a day. :?

I think you'll find most people get similar advice to this. and some but by no means all think that this advice is flawed.
I think that the best advice is to experiment with different foods and see what happens! The problem with the sort of advice given by health professionals is that it is "off the peg, one size fits all" and this is clearly not the case, therefore a proactive approach is probably best.

Calamityjane1937,

Good advice from bolders! It all boils down to the individual, you say that you wake between 5.5-6.0, that is excellent, but do you maintain this level most of the day?

The mainstream advice is to eat a diet consisting of carbs, but there are some (myself included) that cannot control their diabetes on the RDA of carbs, therefore have cut-out most carbs, or reduced them like I have. Therefore, it is down to a few things, should you presently have good control of your diabetes on the diet you are on, and you are happy with the foods you eat, don't change anything, if you are struggling with your control, it may be worth your while experimenting and reduce your carb intake to a level where you can maintain good control; the choice is all yours!

Hope this helps clarify things!

I haven't come across anyone who believes the latest T2 DUK dietary advice that warns against carb reduction with the threat of brain malfunction. And as for eating 7-14 portions of starchy carbs daily - amounting to the equivalent of 42 tablespoons of rice daily - :!:

A sensible diet includes reducing carbs & upping vegetables, seeds, bran, eggs, & nuts. I eat plengty of cheese also. While adjusting your diet - test.

I followed the starchy carb advice for 7-8 years until the crippling neuropathy started. Reduced carb has substantially reversed the problem. All my HPs approve as they see it works.

As posted you can experiment with various carbs. I for instance can eat peas and carrots without any problem while I know others can't Rice and Pasta shoot me to the moon. I cant tolerate sugar alcohols either in these sugarless brands of candy. I have to watch the sugarless sweeteners too. Anything liquid works better for me than granule.

Hi CalamityJane,

Looking at your other posts where you gave some fairly high readings I wonder how you have been getting on and how are your numbers now. The advice Hana gave you the other day is spot on and worth following. I doubt that your dn is doing anything other than advising you from her textbook and experience is really one of the keys to all this. Bolders is right too.

I have been cutting down on the carbs and testing to see what foods do what to me. I have ended up having to cut the carbs quite dramatically and at present am not eating bread, potatoes, pasta, oats and rice and have had to steer clear of melon and bananas BUT I feel dramatically better and more in control. 8)

We are all different and you may find you can cope with foodstuffs that others can’t. At the end of the day (and all through the day!) concentrated testing is one of the other keys!
