Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone

I have extreme fatigue - I am doing only what i need to do to get through my day.

Went and had a blood test done - doctors came back and said diabetes but rules are i need to have another blood test. Which is booked for Thursday and then he has booked me in to see him the Thursday after.

During this time -I have bought a blood test machine and my readings are as high as 17.6 and as low as 8.5 -12.9 on fasting.

I cut all carbs and absolutely felt like **** so I stopped and carried on as I would have normally and this has taken me 3 days to get back to what is my normal

Do you think that because I have high blood sugar normally that I cannot go lower as it feels like I am having a low (like animia) and when I've tested I've expected a reading of 2 because I feel so low and it's been between 8.5 and 12.9 ???

Any advice please

Your brain is used to a nice warm sugary bath - when the levels started to drop it threw a wobbly.
The same thing happened to me, and was stopped by my eating a few grapes, when it got really bad, but it only lasted about 30 hours, and then my numbers went on down with no problem.
A meter is really valuable to give you reassurance - you need to believe what it tells you, as eating carbs can have consequences.

The delay in diagnosis has been due to my doctors have been testing me for other things and doing ecg tests and copd tests etc

They asked for me to do blood pressure tests for 7 days and do a blood test

They then ring and say I am diabetic

So me being me ...

I looked up on here and stopped carbs which then caused me to crash and sleep and feel so tired I couldn't function

What I am asking is this normal ? What can I do - should I carry on as I normally would have until seeing the doctor in 2 weeks?

Do I need to keep my blood sugars high to keep myself functioning? Because if I go to less than 15 I feel like I am shaky hungry and cannot think straight - is this normal ?

It's taken me Thursday Friday Saturday and half of today to bring myself round I've felt so terrible
Been asleep all weekend apart from getting up for an hour here and there

Your body is used to running on high sugar levels, which in the long run will lead to serious complications. . Cutting carbs dramatically can cause "carb flu" which lasts for a few days in some people and can make you feel awful. It does go away after a short time though.
Perhaps try to lower them more gently if you're not ready for the full on LCHF yet. Cut out sugary snacks and maybe half your portions of starchy stuff. If you are used to eating loads of carbs, this may be a gentler way of helping yourself until you see your GP.
What sort of things do you normally eat. Perhaps we can help with a few suggestions on how to change for the better.

Hi normally I eat for breakfast bacon sausage and egg with toast

Dinner - either a cheese and onion sandwich or egg mayo

Tea - beef dinner to Chinese I do eat lots of vegetables

Then because I've been feeling a low I've been having digestive biscuits and chocolate bars (this is because I actually thought I was animic due to constantly getting
Lows)

I was feeling really bad fatigue but once I cut out the chocolate I basically crashed hard. Then I thought oh my god so I've gone back To how I was eating before

I do seem to wake up starving hungry then eat then 4 hours later I'm hungry so I have my sandwiche and then I'm
Ready for my tea.

Hi,

I was diagnosed 5 weeks ago, my BS level was 54 and my ther one if the charts...

I got a call from my doctor saying her needed to see me urgently and to come straight into the surgery.

Ok what he recommended was,

I ate no fruit, fruit juice ir cereals. No bread, potatoes, pasta or rice in fact no carbs or as few as possible.

I asked him what I should eat and he said eggs were good.

My first finger pricking test when I got to the surgery was 48

He gave me 5 days to get it down 15 otherwise he would start me on insulin.

I came back and Google became my friend, I kept typing in how much sugar in bread, how much sugar in mushrooms etc and it gives you carbs and sugar in each item.

I then tried to sort out a diet... Bacon and eggs for breakfast is good
Lots of protein is good so lunch was chicken and salad
And dinner was veg and some kind of meat...

Then I found this site and it's become a lot easier...

After 5 days my blood sugar levels were at 10-12.5

After 12 days they were 7-9

And for the last three weeks they have been between 4.5 and 7. Apart from one reading of 9.8 2 hours after eating tinned tomatoes...

You need to eat but if you check your blood before and 2 hours after you eat you will be able to see what affects you.

I'm one of the lucky ones, I didn't suffer at all as my blood sugar dropped but I know a lot of people do.

I would really try the low carb again, it makes a huge difference

Good luck though what ever you do

If you cut down on the carbs you should soon see lower numbers and start to feel better - I reduced my intake of carbs down to almost nothing on the day I was diagnosed - that was for dinner, as the appointment was mid afternoon, then I ate about 10 gm of carbs in the morning and 15 in the evening for a few days, with coffee and a few nuts in the middle of the day. my numbers soon dropped and I had a day of feeling wobbly - but once that was sorted out I've been full of energy and seeing weight loss, and low blood glucose. I am never hungry and my medical people aren't even talking to me now.
Carbs make you feel hungry, and maintaining double digit blood glucose levels is going to be a really bad idea in the long term.
Low blood glucose is perhaps 5 or under - and 'hypo' is about 4 mmol/l or less - and for a type 2 it should mean that your liver will start to supply glucose to the blood - it is just part of the normal regulation of glucose which you want to encourage, not stop by eating chocolate and biscuits.

Thank you so much for your reply this is the reply that I needed
I was so worried In case I should not drop the carbs and it would make me really ill (because they don't seem to tell you anything) I will drop carbs but slowly and hopefully I will now be ok

I'm really lucky, my doctors brilliant, I had a review on Friday, he's astounded that I've got my levels do low so quickly, but it was him that recommended me to go straight to low carb. There are apps out there to that you log what your eating and they tell you the sugar and carb content. I'm not going to say it's easy but it's really worth trying.

I'm currently eating about 10-20gms of carbs per day, but depending on what I eat it's sometime 30. But I eat a lot of protein and eggs now and never feel hungry. I found a sugar free, carb free syrup that I put into coffee as I like sweet coffee and that kept me on the straight and narrow.

However check out the diet doctor website they gave lots of things to help.

Just take it a day at a time, and ask questions... I've asked some really silly ones and people have really helped. What's brilliant about this site is everyone's a real person and there's so much experience here that you get the help you need.

What you are describing is fairly common, but is not normal.

You may find some spoonful of virgin coconut oil to be helpful in managing the hunger and the lowering glucose level.

Try watching Sarah Hallberg on this video - it's less than 20minutes and explains quite a lot of what our bodies do when diabetic:

It certainly convinced me that low carb was the way to go. The carb flu can be pretty dire but if you are prepared for it to happen then just know it WILL pass and then you will start to feel better. A mug of Bovril made all the difference to me when feeling rough.

The false 'hypos' are also a bit of a nightmare - I just tested my blood to check whether it was a real low or just lower than my body was used to - if the latter then I just sat it out, reassured that it was only my body getting used to lower levels than its 'normal' and realising that my body was just going to have to get used to it.

((((Hugs)))) - you CAN do this and take charge of your diabetes rather than letting it take charge of you

Thanks for the rundown. The carbs will be causing you to be varying so wildly and feeling so bad.

Breakfast looks mostly OK. Make sure your sausages are good ones with high meat content, add mushrooms and tomatoes maybe and cut back a bit on the toast. If you have a Lidl nearby they do a great High Protein Roll in the bakery section which only has about 10 carbs.

Replace the bread at lunch with the Lidl roll ? Add lots of fresh salad and full fat mayo.

Dinner.. cut back on the rice with the chinese and any sweet thick sauces.. Roast dinners cut back on the potatoes and add more above ground veg.

Don't try to starve yourself. Have snacks if you are hungry.. Nuts are good.. Celery spread with no sugar peanut butter, or pate, or full fat cream cheese is tasty too. Pork scratchings too, if you like them.
Have coffee with double cream too, that is quite filling.

Take it easy and don't panic.. you can take control x

Hi. Yes, just keep the carbs down and don't stop them. You can always reduce them gradually if concerned about carb flu. As long as you are having enough proteins and fats your body doesn't actually need any carbs but gradual changes make sense and having some carbs is fine
