Hi all

I'm not an alcohol just confused! But I do like my red wine and G&Ts at the weekend. I know white wine has a carb count, as do port and liquers, but I can't find out about red wine - if dry cider has carbs do other dry alcoholic drinks?? :?:

Also I am finding my first am readings have not dropped much from the night before 2 hour post dinner readings, as these are about 8.5 pm and 8.2 am I am not concerned but curious as to why when day time readings drop before the next meal why does this not occur over night? - This has nothing to do with alcohol or the venings carb count (honest)!

Also I know what can occur if the readings are low (I've had the dizzy, unable to think or focus moments at 4.4) but what happens if your readings are too high - any symptoms to look out for? all the literature seams to focus on hypos not hyperglycaemia.

Thanks

according to most web site red wine has about 1.7 -1.8 g of carb per 3.5oz glass - dry white wine less at 1g of carbs - dry cider 15g carb in 1 pint. As some of us may be partial to a sherry or port at christmas a 2fl oz glass of sherry 3g same size port 6g - if you google carbs in alcoholic drinks you will get plenty of sites that give you the carbs for both generic and branded drinks - my advice t0 anyone is stay of the alcopops Smirnoff ice = 30g carb!

Hi!

I am very newly joined, and trying to find out about alcohol as I really do enjoy my red wine! Unfortunately it's not just the carbs. Alcohol interferes with the way your liver processes glucose, and actually reduces your blood glucose to the point that you can have a hypo if you take in too much alcohol. I've noticed previously that I've had night sweats and heart palpitations after too much wine, and I'm beginning to think these were alcohol-induced hypos even before I was diagnosed type 2. So I'm afraid that it really is alcohol in moderation - 1 or 2 glasses - and if you throw caution to the winds and have a session, do it earlier in the evening, check your levels before bed, and maybe have a high-protein snack or some really low-GI carbs to go to bed on.

I've recently been doing the Atkins diet but also drinking wine (weak willed!), and it's noticable that it has slowed my weight loss considerably.

There's something called the 'dawn phenomenon' which affects bg first thing in the morning. I have this effect too, though normally around 7 rather than higher. Again, it's something I'm trying to learn about. Try Googling - there's quite a lot of info out there. It too could be related to the alcohol - a bounce-back after going too low? I'd be grateful for any info from someone who knows better!

Giving up drink is not easy - but very good for us, and think of all the money we'll save!

Cheers

Vivienne
