Until recently I was consuming around 100 g to 200 g of ground almonds daily. I made waffles/ bread from them , so they were always 'cooked/heated'. Over the months of eating them I gradually noticed an increased number of strange bowel movements until they became a daily (unpleasant) event. They could last 30 mins in the worse case and it was not diarrhea.

I stumbled upon a site that noted Almonds can be toxic and can have unpleasant gastric effects. It was also noted that the fats in Almonds became 'unstable' when heated.

I stopped eating them this week and haven';t had any stomach problems since. Anyone else experience problems with Almonds ? I guess I was eating too large a quantity and will have to mix almond flour with flax seed in the future, I can't do without my waffles much longer :-(

It sounds like an allergic reaction to me. You'll probably get a better idea if you try some again after a break.

To my utter surprise I feel inclined to agree with Noblehead who advocates moderation in diet. I think moderation in almond consumption would limit it to around 30-50 grams per day in average.

There are other nuts too, you know. I fancy hazelnuts and walnuts over almonds but there are so many others to choose from so why stick with almonds? .

........... because they come ready ground i.e. flour and are the best substitute when baking IMHO. Where I live , these are the only ground nuts that I can buy from the shops. Grinding your own nuts to make flour is a laborious process.

I'm going to give them a wide birth for a month ...........

I am a hopeless cook so I don't use almonds in this way, I simply don't bake anything! :) I never used to eat nuts at all because I didn't like them, but I started to introduce them to my diet whilst I was pre-diabetic as a replacement for crisps and gradually learnt to like them. So I suppose at last the fact that I am a fussy eater and can't cook is of benefit to me in that I haven't had these problems.;) Sorry to hear about yours though, let's hope your body can tolerate cooked almonds again in the future.:)

I use one of these.

I use a mix of ground almonds, coconut flour & milled flax seed for my daily nut porridge - 2 des sp each.

~I've just weighed:
GA - 16 g
CN - 12 g
Flax - 14 g

I use the same ratio - double quantities - for a nut cake that I eat over 2 days, so about 100 g nuts/seeds per day, plus what I eat as nuts & peanut butter - another 50 g.

I don't have bowel problems.

Are you sure the almonds are guilty? I have just been reading your protein powders thread. That stuff can bung you up I believe. Could it be a combination of the two?

I've not been bunged up :-) I stopped the almonds 1 week ago and haven't had any stomach problems during this time, so I think they were the culprit. Shame because almond waffles and almond flour cake made this illness almost bearable :-( I've also found my insulin sensitivity has vastly improved since stopping , probably due to less fat floating around my blood stream.

Nuts can be a big trigger for gastro issues. I never had a problem with any nuts, including almonds, and would eat up to 100g mixed nuts for a couple of months at a time to top up on my calorie intake and help me gain weight. However I was doing this just recently (about 60-70g) and they gave me a terrible stomach. For a week I had intermittent watery diarrhoea like a stomach bug. I didn't even figure it to be the nuts at first because they have previously given me no issues.

I do always think too much of any one thing is never good and I assume I've developed a bit of an intolerance.

I've been eating almonds, mostly raw like a rodent.... may have to watch this item.

I use ground almonds, ground hazelnuts and occasionally pecans or walnuts for baking. I probably eat about 50-60g nuts a day this way, plus other nuts and nut butters in moderation. I don't have any issues, but do I find I sometimes have quite bulky bowel movements, but I've assumed always assumed this is an effect of plenty of fibre though rather than nuts.

I have noticed any, new to me, food - I tend to binge on it. Having it in mirad (sp?) of ways as it creates a flavour sensation across my taste buds. This tenancy is ever prominent with the big D, but alas caution must be executed as I really don't want 30 minute toilet experiences. Thank you brave Wurst, intrepid explorer.
:D
