Hi Everyone....Newbie here..Recently diagnosed Type 2...and also monitoring my Blood 2 hours after eating...

I’m on 500mg once a day Sukkarto Metoformin (slow release)

Ive discovered recently that the sourdough bread that I thought was better for me is giving me high Sugar levels....would love to hear your alternatives

Thanks Kev

You might not want to hear this, but I just don't have bread any more. I just increase whatever was going with it instead. For example lunch today that would have been sandwich was simply a lot more of the filling, eggs, cheese and avocado.

Scrambled eggs for breakfast are served on a plate, not on toast but I cook an extra egg, or 2

Increasing protein (meat, fish, eggs, dairy) and natural fats (meat, dairy) keeps me full as long as I eat enough.

I rarely miss bread but keep a loaf of HiLo in the freezer for when I want cheese on toast , or poached eggs. I've just opened by 3rd loaf in 3 years, thats how rarely I have it.

Hi ya....I was expecting this...the alternatives I have looked up sound awful...thanks for responding x

Yes, most of the commercial ones are pretty grim, and expensive! I just fill up on simple real one word food - chicken, beef, prawns, eggs (a thousand ways), cream etc. No packets!
Might be a bit painful for the first few weeks while you adapt but it gets easier. I had my 3 years diagnosis anniversary this weekend. Curry Saturday night, roast dinner Sunday. Tasty

Oh forgot the good veges, cauliflower cabbage, broccoli, green beans, all make good fillers

Hi some people find it easier and preferable to give up bread completely but I'm not one of them and have found some low carb alternatives that work for me although I don't eat a lot of them and always split and freeze any low carb breads until ready to warm or toast a slice of bread or heat a wrap.
Best very low carb wraps and rotis I've found are baked by
Deliciouslyguiltfree.com
I also buy low carb blondies and brownies from them. They are also gluten free.

Other commercial low carb breads usually include gluten
Cheapest options are from supermarkets including Hilo from Sainsburys and livlife from Waitrose

There are a range of more expensive low carb bakeries that sell products online two I've heard good review about are
Seriously low carb and the low carb company you can Google.
It's very individual and five years ago when I started out low carbing very few products were out there and I home baked but these days I just eat small amounts and really enjoy having some. I've just started buying the roti from deliciously guilt free and they make my curry night special.

It's personal though and commercial low carb products are expensive and not needed nutritionally so it's what works best for you and your lifestyle
Edit forgot to say welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy your journey towards good health.
Edit to add I also love cauliflower rice as a rice alternative

Im now a bit scared of red meat...I had steak on Sunday...felt guilty as...
I picked up a large sirloin this afternoon - I have a steak about once a week, and other red meat on maybe two or three other days. I'm not sure why you feel guilty - it doesn't do anything to my blood glucose and will keep me feeling fed for a couple of days.

I use bread substitutes from a firm called Srsly Low Carb (not sure of the spelling, because they don't use the correct spelling themselves). They do (eg) rolls that look like bread, and will hold hot meat or cheese (or both) and have about 2g carbs but don't really taste like bread. I use about a dozen in a month.

Hi ya...maybe I'm now paranoid about everything I normally like to eat....certainly cant give up my red meat....lol...PS thanks for advise about https://seriouslylowcarb.com/...:)

Before my blood glucose issues I was diagnosed with severe wheat and gluten allergies (adult onset). I cried, bread was my life….I tried all the gluten free loaves, horrid, every single one. I had rice wraps for awhile and made my own gluten free bread. Yuk, nothing compares to real bread. Now I just don’t even think about it. I will not eat any processed low carb, gluten free products. The ingredient list is just no good.
on occasion I will make egg white rolls (egg whites, egg white protein powder, beef gelatin, salt and two egg yolks…topped with cheese). They suck plain but I fry them up in butter or bacon fat…yum, they work well for grilled cheese or just toast. Zero guilt, zero ****! Egg white protein can be pricy (I’m in Canada) but I’m worth it!
why the issue with beef? Ruminant animals are what we should be eating…
at this time I eat zero to five carbs per day. My damaged pancreas just can’t deal with much.
best of luck to you

Hi Shelley...just done a search of Deliciouslyguiltfree.com...and guess what it 15 minutes away from where i work in Papworth Cambridge....:p:p lol
That's good news as you can pick up from them without shipping I understand it's a small company owner and main baker is Dan Greef I really rate the company you can talk to Dan by message I believe if you want to collect. I live too far away so have to rely on royal mail!

Kev, if it's any consolation my cholesterol has fallen since I dropped carbs and increased protein and fats. I have to say I pay zero attention to it anyway as I consider intake figures meaningless given that we make 80% of it, but there you are.

I was not aware that diverticulitis had any association with eating red meat - I can't find anything (in a very quick search) that would support that. Isn't diverticulitis apparently eased by increasing fibre intake?

Outdated myths in the main. Unless it has actually flared your diverticulitis I wouldn’t worry. (Same for nuts and seeds as that only ever conjecture not proven). Most cholesterol is made in the body not from food and reducing carbs usually lowers it far more than reducing meat.
