Help! Does anyone know why I am constantly tired? My sugars aren't too bad and my last hba1c was 91, which is good considering I am usually up in the 100's with my Hba1c! Quite frustrating

Some people with diabetes lack vitamin B12 and need this boosting. If there is no other reason you can think of, ask to be tested for this. Good luck !

There could be a number of reasons for your tiredness, do you suffer from depression, or could be due to anaemia or thyroid disorder, vitamin deficiencies and so forth, best discuss with your doctor and probably have some blood tests done to try and find out the cause of this tiredness.
You said in another thread that you are a worrier, so its possible that all this worrying is zapping your energy.

I guess it could be the B12 deficiency! And well last year I was diagnosed with slight depression, but was given no treatment for it, as they said I have number of reasons to be depressed etc, I also thought I overcame the depression! Sorry for all the questions and stuff!

Aww darling, dont apologise, you can ask as many questions as you like, there will always be someone here who will try to help you, just that it gets a bit confusing when there are duplicate posts, makes things easier if things are a bit more compact instead of all over the place.

You said that you was diagnosed as depressed, do you take medication, if so then tiredness could be a side effect of the meds, but really its best you have a decent check up at the doctors.

big hug for you x

No she didn't give me any meds for the depression as she thought I would be able to get over it myself etc, and that I wasn't as much as a risk I think. But yes I think another trip to the Doctors is needed!

Thank you so much :) x

When I lost some weight and exercised more my energy levels went up.

Which was a bit depressing as I always said that being over weight didn't hold me back.

But it did.

I just have to remind myself that being alive is better than chocolate.

That possibly could be my case I'm 5ft11 and about 13stone :/ but am told I carry it well, so I am a little over weight but I just struggle so hard to lose the weight that I want to loose!

There are several physical causes of tiredness
1. High blood sugars
2. Anaemia
3. Vitamin D deficiency
4. Vitamin B12 deficiency
5. Underactive Thyroid.

Go back to your doc and get this lot tested. Vitamin D deficiency can make you feel terrible, it also affects your blood sugar.

The other thing to bear in mind is that all these vitamins interact with each other, so while it could be manifesting itself as anemia fro example, a lack of B-vits, 12 in particular can prevent uptake of iron, as can caffiene, alcohol and a generally irritated gut.

Although you can get injections, tablets etc to deal with the symptoms, you may need to look at your diet as well, adn in particular think about natural sources of the vitamins as the synthetic versions in tablets can sometimes not be absorbed as well.

Hope you feel better soon

Don't mean to sound silly but r u getting enough sleep and solid sleep not broken if i was always tired this would be were i would look first stress diet even the temp can affect our sleep have a good think about ur sleep pattern before u take any pills or change ur routine its just a thought x

Hi Nicola

Do you have any other health issues? Do you feel like you have CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome)? If your body is overworking to fight inflammation/infections etc, then this is another plausable reason.

Sugar causes inflammation which in turn initiates an immune response. The body is working overtime to reduce the inflammation - hence the tiredness. This notion is generally ridiculed by the medical profession and some people but I really believe this.

I used to have loads of energy and (on the flip side) wonder why I was so tired for periods at a time. I put it down to working long hours/stress etc. I am pre-diabetic and having to watch my diet - this too is a factor.

But as others have mentioned, get your bloods/iron/thyroid function checked for peace of mind.

Hi Nicola

My first reply failed - so I'll try again.

Do you have any other health issues? Do you feel you have CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome)?

I have periods of high energy/extreme tiredness which I put down to working long hours etc, but now I'm beginning to realise this may not be the cause for me.

Sugar consumption causes inflammation which initiates an immune response by the body. By "fighting" the inflammation, the body wears itself out - hence the tiredness. This notion is ridiculed by the medical profession at large and you might think I'm totally bonkers. But it makes sense and might be a plausible option.

But of course, get your bloods/iron/thyroid function checked out for peace of mind - just in case

Okay will do :) the only thing that flared up on my blood test last time was low potassium but I will get it checked out :)

If your having bloods checked get coeliac disease checked - can affect BG and many other things!

Eat some banana Nicola to correct potassium levels. Also what are your iron levels like on your last bloodtest and how is your poo when you use the loo?

I was on these potassium tablets for a while so I think it is okay now, and I don't know is that checked when you go for hba1c? and as for the poo pretty normal I think but then again I don't really check that? :S

Coeliac disease once it gets going undetected, results in low iron levels, low vit d and a few other vital vits as well. Coeliacs don't absorb the goodness from the food that gets eaten because the gluten in it stops them. Undiagnosed coeliac disease also leads to having a lot of flatulence with pale looking greasy poo so as you haven't got that (yet) then you are probably ok.

What bolus insulin are you using at the moment?
