Am I likely to be diabetic?

Hi. I agree with xyzzy that at your young age and not being overweight if you are shown to be diabetic it is likely to be LADA or MODY i.e. late onset type 1. These can creep up on you quite rapidly so tests you had only a year or so ago would be irrelevant. Hopefully your GP will do all the right tests and correctly diagnose you. If you are diabetic and your GP just classes you as T2 as you weren't a T1 at birth then be prepared to discuss further.

MODY isn't late onset type 1. It's a completely separate form of diabetes caused by a single, faulty dominant gene which can be identified in most, but not all sufferers. Most GPs do not know much about it though, if anything.

Got my tester today, 5.6 fasting this morning, just ate bout 45 mins ago will update in a couple hours, cheers for all of the advice so far

Edit: 6.4 2 hours after a small meal, will check again after a bigger meal later on

7.9 2 hours after a meal today - had no sugar at all today though

I assume I'd be better off trying to eat a normal diet for a few days while I test it?

I agree. Normal diet for tests. Sounds like youight be joining our club from your results so far though-but close call!

What did you eat for your meal? Sounds like you may be prediabetic if not full blow diabetes.

Grilled Chicken breast, Green Beans, White Rice

I defiantly feel like its sugar related, the headaches have actually calmed down a bit the last couple days with avoiding sugar, but I ate a bannana about an hour ago and have a bit of a dull ache now

Missed the delivery of my tester today, so went to a chemist to get a test and got a reading of 6.9 before eating I assume thats a bit high?

I'm no expert.
6.9 fasting is high, but not diagnostically so (my pratise requires two tests [fasting]to both read over seven before they will diagnose Diabetes). Obviously there is something going on here that is more than 'straightforward' diabetes. Sorry but you will just have to bite your nails until the GP appointment. The 16.? reading would worry me (if the test was reliable) as your body seems to have the blood glucose levels on a roller coaster.

OPINION:-
Seems to me that the "empty" "lightheaded feeling" are symptomatic of low blood sugar then you get readings of +16. Fluctuations like this are not usually caused by T2 diabetes.

6.9 fasting is high. One of the criteria used to define diabetes is a fasting BG of > 7mmol/l. You're on the border of that, although obviously one reading in isolation could easily be wrong.

Having said that, when I was diagnosed my BG was 24mmol/l, so 7mmol/l isn't chronic out of control diabetes.

OP can you do your own glucose tolerance test? Test after you've not eaten for a few hours, then have a large glass of orange juice or lucozade something like that, then do another test an hour later , one at two hours and let us know the results.
This will show how easily your body is processing the sugar.

Right, had a bit of messing about with the doctors, My appointment was canceled because they had some kind of emergency, No idea what it was but I went past about 15 mins later and there was 3 ambulances outside and a police car, Anyways they offered me an appointment for friday which I couldnt make so I've now got one for Thursday this week again, As you can tell my doctors is completely useless

Anyways I've bought a load more test strips so I can monitor it myself

Whats the best times to do it? fasting one in the morning then 2 hours after every meal?

5.7 fasting result this morning, 5.4 2 hours after a small meal

Few strange readings today, Anyone got any idea on what this mean?

Fasting 7.9
2 Hours after a small meal, 7.2
2 Hours after a larger meal later on 6.4

i know absolutely nothing about blood sugar, but surely they should be going upwards after food and not down?

No, your BG will peak at 30-60mins after a meal, and by 2 hours it should be more or less back to fasting levels.

At 2 hours after a big meal you should aim to keep your BG at <7.8mmol/l (or lower).

If you were non-diabetic, it would probably be less than 5mmol/l.

But your results are really good (especially for a beginner). If you can keep it up, you'll have the whole diabetes thing licked.

Hi there,

Just to throw something else into the mix. The constantly hungry feeling could also be a symptom of an overactive thyroid! This could also be accompanied with sweating, shaking, palpatations or rapid pulse, diorrea and weight loss. Worth asking for a thyroid function test if you have some of the other symptoms too.

Hope you get it sorted,

Lucy xxx
