Hi Everyone

For some reason i thought id buy a blood sugar testing kit to check my blood.

I had fasted for about 8-10 hours, i woke up and checked my blood sugar level before eating or drinking anything , ( only brushed my teeth )

My reading came up to 6.7. Does this now mean that i have pre diabetes?

What should I do ?

***Update Today***

Well despite many of you saying put away the machine and just wait till the doctors i couldn't help it and take another fasting test ( finger prick )

Yesterday It was 6.7 and today its 6.3

Just to let you know what I ate yesterday it was.

Kellogs Frosties cereal with whole fat milk.
A home pamde toasty which had 2 slices of white bread , 2 slice of cheeder chesese light mayo and a can of tuna.
50g of blue berries
Half a chicken from nandos ( around 400g ) and also chicken liver ( 150grams ) with spicy rice ( 200 grams ) all from nandos.
Ginger Tea
A glass of ACV about 1am, i went to sleep about 3 and woke up at around 10.45, I took the morning test at 11:15 before eating or drinking anything.

I will take another test tomorrow as i only have 1 strip left.

Do you think I should completely cut all carbs today and take the test tomorrow or should i perhaps do the reverse ie eat what i want carb and sugar or not and see how it effects my blood for tomorrow morning. ?

Fasting blood glucose levels are unreliable as a diagnostic tool. To be diagnosed with any form of Diabetes must be done by having two blood tests (intravenous) by a qualified Health Care Proffesional. We cannot diagnose you, we are not doctors.

Hi @speedking668 your testing numbers are raised if your monitor is reasonably accurate. Just in general you might want to try for breakfast what I had this morning 2 sausages (interchangeable with bacon or maybe a bit of both), generous amounts of mushrooms, tomatoes and eggs whichever way. You might want to have circa 12 to 16 hours between your last meal and when you “break your fast”, I do 16 plus hours.

I would 100% recommend that you do neither. Please seek reassurance from your doctor rather than layman's self-testing of just one variable.
:)

ok relax your not diabetic after the amount of carbs you put away my bloods would be a heck of a lot higher than the 6s. i would not change anything until youve seen your doctor. if you have pre diabetes your not going to hurt yourself by waiting. if the doctor after testing you thinks you have re diabetes the only treatment you will need is a diet change.

Please let us know how you get on at your doctors appointment. Try not to worry.

Please don't be paranoid. Speaking as a non-medical professional, just someone with some experience of her own diabetes, I feel that nothing you've said indicates to me that you are in any danger of harm between now and then (and indeed beyond). Hugs.

You are worrying over something that can't be changed significantly between now and seeing the doctor. It would help if you locked away your meter and enjoy Christmas. Stress, such as you seem to be experiencing, will not be helping. It isn't just food that causes raised levels.

Just to update this , I only had 1 strip left so thought id use it again this morning ,

This time the reading has been 5.7.

I had a coco pops cereal bar for in the morning.
50 g of blue berry
Ploughmans sandwich from M&S
A Prawn Salad from M&S
Chicken Curry around 300grams with 2 large garlic naan bread.

On my instruction booklet in which my BG meter came it does say. "You cannot diagnose high sugars or diabetes with this meter, please see a doctor if you are concerned about high sugars or diabetes" So going by that, you cannot really tell unless you have a blood test. You need to make an appointment with a doctor to put your mind at rest.

This isn't something you should be worried about. The nice thing is that either way, you can start making changes to your diet and lifestyle to bring it down (whether you are progressing to diabetes or not). Diet is very effective at managing pre-diabetes so ask your doctor about it or seek out a nutritionist.

If you are worried about blood glucose, try a couple of days of low carb eating and then test it and think about how you feel. Eggs and butter for breakfast. Coffee with cream, no milk. Salad or green leafy veg for lunch with hard cheese or tuna fish, no mayo, only olive oil. Dinner: steak or mince or chicken fried in butter with green veg, no dessert, no bread, no flour, no cereal, no processed food or sugary drinks, no beans all day. Drink plenty of water. Try and see if it makes a difference to your blood sugar level.
