Hi everyone,

In December '13 I went to hospital over the weekend with classic diabetes symptoms of weight loss, thirst etc.

I had a blood sugar of 26 and was put on Novamix 30 that day. because it was the weekend, there was no diabetic specialist available and so I was advised to go to my GP on the Monday to set up the relevant appointments.

Within a couple of weeks I had been put on MDI using Lantus and Novarapid. initially I was on 14 units of lantus and a 1:5 bolus to carb ratio.

Over the next 4 to 6 weeks, the DSN said they no longer needed to see me and I have adjusted my insulin to just 2 units of Lanutus but 1 unit of novorapid to 10g carbs. Through low carbing and exercise, I have managed to maintain a HbA1c of 6 or just below

I revently moved to a new area and booked in at my new GP surgery for an assessment with the DSN. She was amazed that I was only on 2 units of Lantus and arranged for me to see the GP who specialises in diabetes.

He was very suprised that I am on so little background insulin despite the fact I have a more typical bolus ratio. I asked if it could just be the honeymoon period and he thinks not. He phoned an Endocrinologist and is sending me for a c peptide test, abtibody test and a few others. He mentioned LADA diabetes and MODY despite me having no family history of diabetes.

He said that potentially this would change my treatment and could bring me off insulin. I'm not convinced and think I'm just having an extended honeymoon partly due to good control.

Has anybody had a similar experience? Am i Type 1?I guess I wont know until I get my blood redults. At any rate I doubt my treatment will change drastically.

Hi Martin and welcome to the forum. Short answer, Don't know, sorry. It could be either. My guess would be late onset T1 and honeymoon phase but that really is nothing more than a guess. The good news is that your new consultant is conducting the correct tests go determine diagnosis. The GAD antibody test will confirm if you have the auto immune version of diabetes and many are not afforded that test. Lastly, some docs are not too concerned over T1 or T2 now, they refer to it as insulin dependant or non insulin dependant diabetes. Let us know how you get on with blood tests.

From what you say but I can only guess a bit you would appear to be LADA i.e. T1. Your symptoms of weight loss plus high blood sugar, thirst etc implies LADA but you may be in the early stages. It took me around 8 years to go thru tablets to insulin. The c-peptide and GAD tests will help a clearer diagnosis. Yes, 2 units of Lantus is very low so I can understand everyone wanting to check what's going on. Although honeymoon periods do exist it is also true that LADA can come on at greatly varying speeds do in the early days you will still be producing some of your own insulin. It may be you could come off insulin, but you would still need tablets unless you are actually an overweight T2 or one of the more unusual varieties of diabetes. The results should help make things clearer
