If your test was a HbA1c (measured in mmol/mol), then you're just barely in the diabetic range, which starts at 48. Mind you, we can't diagnose on here, the second blood test will do that. But you can learn a lot in the meantime and make a couple of changes to make things a whole lot better. If you haven't officially been diagnosed yet, you MIGHT want to hold off on the changes for those two weeks, so you're confirmed. That is, if you are confirmed. If you are, you get check ups and the like, which can be quite useful.

That said, there's lots you can do to get your blood sugars back into the normal range. That doesn't mean that if you truly are diabetic now, you won't be then: your ability to process carbs is impaired and that's not going to change a whole lot, that's a permanent thing. Sorry. Add carbs back into your diet, (practically all carbs turn to glucose once ingested), and your blood sugars will go back up.

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html <-- have a read, it might help and put your mind at ease some. And have a think. Do you want to be registered as a diabetic, assuming your second test'll show the same, or not. I personally prefer being listed because of the checks and tests. Personal preference though.

Good luck!
Jo

PS: You'll be okay whatever happens. It's not as bad as you might think, and you can do a lot to control this thing.

Hi @Angel74 and welcome to the forum.
I see no reason for you to worry! There is a reason to take action since (assuming the 50 is an Hba1C test result) you are probably just inside the Diabetic range and it is a good idea to cut down on eating carbohydrates.

As Joe says the diabetic range for the HbA1C test starts at 48 so if your 2nd test confirm, then you are only just inside the Diabetic range. And people in this forum have reversed and controlled their blood glucose back down into the 'normal ' (= below 42) level through a Low Carb High(er) traditional Fat way of eating, even when starting out with an HbA1C over twice as high as yours.

Try not to worry, a change in diet as already suggested will help matters. When I started I was eating over 250gms of carb a day, sadly a figure recommended. Now I eat less than 50gms, I don't miss carbs and my BG is usually pretty good.

Hi, firstly do not panic. Whatever the second test the outcome is perfectly manageable. I have type 2 and I manage mine with a combination of diet and some medication. Basically my diet has less carbs and starchy veg, no cakes and sweets no refined sugar added to anything. I follow this most of the time (90%) and I can treat my self on occasion, My treats really have become treats and not part of my regular diet.. Thats about it really. My weight is lower, my blood sugar is at a healthy level most of the time and I just get on with life. A little bit of adjustment to your eating habits (which you will get used to pretty quick) and you will be very likely be absolutely fine.. Good luck..

The 50 is indeed just over the current cutoff point for a diagnosis of T2, but if, and it’s a big if, you’re experiencing early symptoms of some kind of diabetes then don’t be too worried about drastically changing what you eat yet. There’s more than one kind of diabetes and the ways Type 1 and T2 are treated are different.
If you generally eat a lot of carbohydrate, things like bread, rice, naan, potato, cake, sweets, pasta, banana, figs, dates, chutneys and jams, then there’s no harm in reducing the amount you eat, especially if you have a higher BMI.
I hope the next test results puts your mind at rest!
