Hiya

Been diagnosed over a year with Type II, question is I was told last year you have an anuual check-up ie bloods, foot check, blood pressure etc. Now do I wait for the GP to authorise these or do I phone the surgery myself and ask for the forms etc to be done, a reminder such like?

Thankyou

I would expect it to be OK to wait for them to contact you......normally, but of course if it has been over a year, then you should give them a ring.....it wouldn't hurt

it may just be that its very busy in your particular area.....

Don't rely on or wait for annual reminders. I'm supposed to receive them for three different conditions at different times of the year and it is rare for one of them not to turn up in any given year - although maybe I get in first sometimes. Not all practices run the same way so probably best to talk with the appointments person for advice.

You cannot trust them to be on top of this. You must chase it up yourself.

@wolfie11969 - I would tend to call the surgery and ask how they handle these things. There seem to be various way to do that. It could be simple a year since the last one, or some places do it the month your birthday falls. That way you can mark your calendar to make sure you're not being forgotten.

Of course, I'm sure if you have reasons for concern, you could ask to be seen in the meantime.

My surgery is pretty good at sending out letters with date for blood test and date for seeing the diabetic nurse for results and annual check up.

Thankyou all

Our surgery are a bit lacksadasical with anything. I'm supposed to have a blood test every 13 weeks for a medication I take (non diabetes related) and I've just had notification of my second this year ha ha. So the medication could be toxic in my system but they forget to send me for the blood tests.

As for the diabetes check it was September last year, so only just over. I was curious as I'm relatively new to all this. I'll give them a call next week and get the ball rolling. It's probably down to too many patients and they only remember to send you your forms etc when you ask for a prescription. I noticed this blood form today has someone on it I dont know or have never seen, a part time pharmacist.

Thanks for all your input

Hi. Like everything in the NHS you have to take control - sadly. My surgery does not send reminders and sometimes gives me a bloods form ready for the next appointment. I am expected to arrange both a bloods appointment a couple of weeks before the review and I also book the review. It works well when you know how the surgery works.
