Hi Everyone

Diagnosed yesterday with a 2nd blood result was 119. I’m completely out of my comfort zone with this. Sounds like I’ve got loads to learn so apologies in advance for lots of questions.
I’ve just used my pen for the first time literally ate 30 mins ago but my reading was 28.5G?? I only had tuna, lettuce and cherry tomatoes with a drizzle of salad cream.????

Hello, and welcome @GoodClaret .
Question away.
There is some basic info for new members in my signature. Have a read. Then come back and ask more questions. We learn from each other.

Good choice of name btw. It made me take notice. Some good news is that red wine, generally doesn’t cause increase in blood glucose for many of us. Taken in moderation, of course. :);)

Hi and welcome to the forums.

What was your reading before you ate? You need this to understand the effect of the food you ate.

Did you wash your hands (with a simple soap) before testing ?

Yes, was about to edit my post to include this. If traces of food was on finger after eating that could affect the post meal reading.

Also it would be helpful to know what Type you have been diagnosed with and what insulin(s) you have been prescribed - you mentioned a pen so I'm assuming its an insulin pen?, though note even the fast acting insulins don't all kick in in only 30 mins

Hello and welcome,

It is very overwhelming when you receive the diagnosis. The first thing that would be useful for us to know is whether you have been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The second thing to know is whether you have been prescribed any medication to treat diabetes.

Anyway apart from all that- at the beginning it feels like there is a lot to learn. There is also a lot to process. While it can feel overwhelming don't worry it does get better.

The good news is that once you provide a bit more information there are many people on here willing to help. The reason for wanting the information is that the approach to type 1 diabetes can be different to type 2. If you are on medication that will also make a difference to how you go forward- but there are a lot of people on this site so there will be help.

good luck- read around and welcome.

Hi

Thank you for your response. I’ve been diagnosed with type 2. I did that reading as a practice run to ensure that I had done the test correctly. My doctor has given me Gliclazide. I have just taken my first one this morning. I think I’m still in shock to have such a high reading. I’ve tested this morning and got 23.7 before even thinking about having breakfast.
Think I’m in panic mode a little as the doctor hasn’t given me anything apart from testing kit and sheet to complete with food diary and box to record readings.
I’m scheduled another phone on Tuesday to discuss my readings.

Morning

That was my first attempt to test my blood sugars. Just in shock how high it is. 23.7 when I woke up this morning. Washed my hands with just water before doing the test.

Morning Pipp
Without sounding like a complete imbecile how do I read your signature?
Thank you so much for responding.

No, you don’t sound like a complete imbecile at all. I am at fault for assuming you would understand . Sorry.
Any member who chooses to add a ‘signature’ can do this in their profile. My signature is at the bottom of my post. The links to read are the blue text. Just click on them. I have copied the info here, too.

@GoodClaret
Diagnosis is always a shock,.
Remember diabetes takes years to form, and can't be solved overnight. It will take time for your readings to come down, but down they will come if you stick to low carbing.

Its a lifelong marathon, not a sprint.
You'll get loads of support and information on here

Thank you.
The doctor hasn’t given me anything apart from my testing stuff and a sheet to record my readings and a tablet beginning wit G

Hi Again
I have been diagnosed type 2 and given Gliz something tablets.

Hi

That was a test run but today has been my first full day it started with a 20 reading, lunchtime was 17.3 haven’t felt hungry since had a large meal at 3.30 but my reading 7 hours later was 20...

And exactly what did you eat and drink and when? Tell us the full day

Hello and Welcome @GoodClaret

I was pretty shocked, nervous, anxious and scared when I was first diagnosed. You have already shown a great response by
  1. Using your meter and testing. This is so important as it gives you control and allows you to react to your BG levels and also inform your medical support of where you are at.
  2. Finding this site and posting here. I am among many from around the world who consider this to be my number 1 source of support, information and education about diabetes
So please read the links from @Pipp and right now eliminate carbs as this can have an impact on your levels quite quickly as they do need to come down. In simple terms anything sweet including most fruits and pasta, rice and bread. Let us know how you are progressing and how you go on Tuesday with your phone consult
