Type of diabetes
Type 2
After previously posting on here back last nov I think, which was fairly soon after being diagnosed as a Diabetic and being started on novomix 30 straight away, I have suffered ill health with my kidneys have had 3 surgeries on them and had my gall bladder out within the last 7 months plus 4 bouts of systemic sepsis so have had some pretty serious infections. At the time I was diagnosed I was told by the Diabetic specialist doctor that my high blood sugars were probably due to the infections I have had and that once my surgeries were over I would be able to come off the insulin, as far as I am aware the only test they did on me at the time was the hba1c which was 90 at the time.
Why am I worried, my operations are all over I no longer have infections or any inflammatory markers in my blood.
I am working really hard on what I eat and drink, I only drink water or no added sugar squash rare cup of tea with sweetener, no sweets biscuits, cakes, bread, have very rare boiled potato have brown rice yet my sugars are seldom in single figures my insulin has been upped again to 30 b4 breakfast 22 b4 dinner, blood sugars are usually around 9.8-10.4 fasting 6.30 am, 10.6 - 14.5 b4 lunch 1pm, 9.5-10.9 6.pm, 10.5- 12.6 b4 bed 10.pm. I have since November had readings in the 5.4 range twice and have had readings as high as 19 and 20 three times .
I had to chase the hospital up for an appointment to see the specialist as originally I was told I would have to wait for a yearly check, I eventually got through to them that I was supposedly only put on insulin as a temporary measure, I am due to get my bloods done on the 8th of February and see the consultant on the 15th February.
I am I guess afraid of what they will tell me, I am worried that even though I am honestly being very good with my diet my blood sugar does not seem to be coming down I just seem to be told all the time increase by two by the diabetic nurse specialists over the phone from the hospital.
I am not too worried if they tell me I have to continue to inject myself as long as my numbers come down.
I am avidly reading through all information I can get and read through many posts on here.

Thank you for listening

Hello Immy, wow you have been through the mill haven't you? Perhaps write a list of questions you want answered ie., are you type 1 is there a better insulin dosing system such as MDI that you can have DAFNE courses to attend and anything else you can think of.

Hi and welcome!

It really does sound as if your first priority should be to get them to test whether you are type 1 or 2.

Sorry to hear about your ops and infections - must have been gruelling. Hopefully you will be able to get some stability in order to recover fully.

Yes ty I am compiling a list of questions, I was informed by the nurses that I would have an appointment to see the dieticians but am still waiting.
I value any suggestions and help from the more experienced diabetic , I have asked the nurses over the phone what type of diabetic was I to be told " you must be a type 2 as it didn't say in my notes" I will be asking how I was diagnosed and how my type was diagnosed. 54 yrs old and refusing to get old.

Ty I will be asking that very question among I am sure many others,

Even though there is no sign of infection or problems, your body has been through major trauma, it can take months be gore e erythema settles back to normal, so it is still very early in recovery. Try not to worry to much, please come on here even just to have a chin wag.

Ty Shar
I keep telling myself that, but as my mother used to say I am too stubborn to do as I am telling myself. I have returned to work just three days a week so it gives me something else to focus on, I love my job.

I know the feeling, getting back to normal is the big step, your head feels like it's time but your body is like nooooo.
In 2012 I only spend 3 months at work through out the year, you know it's time to go back when you find day time TV good.
This time round I've been off for nearly 10 months, cannot see me getting back which is a shame as I loved my job as well. Summed up in quote at bottom of signature

I know what you mean about day time tv, I knew I had to push myself to go back when I would get upset if I missed homes under the hammer. It has however prompted us to put the house on the market to buy a bungalow. I wish you well with your own health and hope one day I will be able to support you on here when you need it too.
Thank you.

Hi

Welcome...

I personally would be asking if novomix 30 is the right strength insulin and are there any alternatives....

There are alternatives like a basal / bolus regime but considering the foods that you are eating I would be asking if there is an alternative to the insulin you are on to get the levels under 8.0....

It sounds as if the nurses etc perhaps ought to understand that there are different diagnosis other than T1 or T2 and that age should not define your diabetes label....

Ha OH wants a bungalow as we live in a townhouse and I struggle with the stairs but the stairs are my sanity, if I get up and down on own then I'm ok

Hi someone mentioned the basal/bollus regime back in November on here so I shall be asking the consultant if I am on the best treatment option I am also keeping a daily diet diary to show him what I am eating/drinking. Out of all the nurses I speak to only one of them actually comes across as though she care.
If it wasn't for the fact I am welsh I would leave wales and move to England in the hope of better medical care. Sorry just venting again.

I had really good treatment in a South Wales hospital from lovely nurse there....
Wales is a gorgeous place to live...
Its good that you are recording all your food too... The more info you give, the better for a Consultant.

Sorry to hear though that you have been through the wars!!

Where in Wales are you, I stayed in Pontypridd for a little while years ago
Live in the rhymney valley now it is beautiful but does make hospital treatment difficult as you tend to get transferred to different hospitals for different tests or treatment which can be a nightmare.

Brilliant place to live.. Can tell you Prince Phillip in Llanelli was superb for diabetes care..

Yes prince Phillip in llanelli is a very good hospital in many departments I used to live in llangennech just up the rd from there, now I have to deal with prince Charles, the royal glamorgan and the royal gwent. So far not overly impressed with any of them for various reasons. I am just grateful to be alive.
Always afraid to complain to staff as you do not want to upset or offend them for fear of how they would treat you later.

I often wonder if there is a difference in care depending where you live.
