hi I’m new to the site, not diagnosed but have an uncle that is. I have randomly checked my levels the last couple of mornings and had readings of 6.1 and today 6.8 is this normal? Thanks

Hi thanks for replying, checked in the morning and hadn’t eaten anything.
Have a very low iron level of 2.3 (awaiting infusions) my folate is low, b12 is low, calcium is also low. Would these affect blood sugar levels?
I’m not a big eater...don’t have breakfast and very rarely lunch, my dinner portions resemble a toddlers portion (am a good weight 9 stone something)

Hi. Don't test early in the morning as the reading will be affected by the liver's overnight glucose dump. Test 2 hours after a typical meal. Those figures don't indicate any problem but they are a small snapshot.

You can't really tell much from a few BG readings (unless they are high (> 10 mmol), or low (<4 mmol ) or worse still a mix of both.
The readings you got are fairly normal, but it is still possible to be in the pre-diabetic and have morning (fasting) readings such as yours.

A diagnosis for Diabetes is usually made from a blood test where a nurse withdraws a vial of blood from you and it is sent off for a test. The main test is an HbA1C test, but if there is doubt about which type of Diabetes it is there are other tests done in order to make that judgement.

First thing in the morning could be the effects of something called the dawn phenomenon where blood sugars go up to give us a boost to get out of bed. Personally I'd be tempted to try and get an HbA1c test just as a marker for a clearer picture of your average blood glucose levels.

1 fresh chicken wrap with a bit of mayo & cheese and a small single spoon of nanchos Thankyou your help!
That would probably be enough to send it up a bit. It's usually a good idea to measure before the first mouthful then 2 hours after to check the impact of food as without knowing what you were before eating its hard to judge what has happened.

Okey dokey have taken advice on board and will have a go of that tomorrow. See how it goes

Thankyou again for your help it’s very much appreciated!

Those reading are my typical readings. I am diagnosed with disbetes although my h1 was just on border.

Not saying you have diabetes but those figures don't mean you don't. Get yourself tested.

Thanks I think I’m going to ask my doctor for the blood test, I checked my level 2hr after my eve meal and it was 6.3 I then checked again (hadn’t eaten a thing) a couple of hours later and it was still sitting on 6.
I don’t know how any of it goes and would of asked my parter but he passed away in April so I’m stuck for the advice which is why I came here :-)
Enjoy your weekend

A finger prick test of 6.0 converted to an HbA1c would be 36 and one of 6.3 would be 38. 6.8 would be 41, but that would have to be an average over three months and from blood test at your surgery.
If those readings were regular an HbA1c of under 42 would just keep you under prediabetes range
