Hello just wondered if there's any fellow musicians on here?? I play alto sax, been playing for about a year now and performed at a couple of gigs with the academy I'm learning with!

Am looking to join a band at the mo but not sure where to look or how to "get in" so to speak!

Thanks :) Laura x

Hi Laura

I play bass. Been doing that since xmas '73. Played in a blues band with a brass section once and it was awesome whenever they came in. (3 sax players). Hope you find a band. Might be worth going to a few local gigs and chatting with the band after their set.

Cool, I've been to a few gigs but no sax there so far! Went out last night and there was a trumpet along with guitars and drums!

I've been playing for just over a year now but I'm sooo nervous when it comes to performing lol!

What sax do u play? I play alto, am thinking about getting a soprano eventually but it's got to be in the typical sax shape of course!

I currently have an alto, I only got one as it is so similar to the clarinet!

- you might be better off getting a tenor. Way more versatile, lots less inclined to shrill moments!

When you say "band", are you just talking rock, or are you interested in the "town band" sort of set up?

You'll probably find info on town bands in the local library. If you want to play in a pop/rock/jazz set up, try the notice boards in your local university/college. - maybe put your own ad up?

Horn player for (oh my God!) nearly 31 years!

Also everything else in the brass family, with varying degrees of success, and the clarinet - a bit. :) but that's all just for fun or to demonstrate.

Cool thanks for that! Wow 31 years, u know a thing or two then lol :)

I want to join any band tbh but preferably not ska, just not keen on it!

I do like the tenor but its those high notes I adore, there's just something really sexy about them lol :P

I was a cathedral chorister in my youth - sang on radio 3 and cut an album ( with the choir, not solo). Unfortunately, when my voice broke, it broke and couldn't be fixed. These days I only sing for my own amusement while driving on my own.

Instrument-wise, we had to learn the descant recorder at school (didn't everyone?) and impressed my granddaughter by playing a couple of tunes from memory! Also had violin lessons but, after 4 years of lessons with a music teacher who shared a mutual dislike of one another, I packed it in.
Tried the clarinet a few years ago with the aim of playing "Stranger on the shore". Once I could play it to my satisfaction I gave it up.
Next on the list is my little ukelele - aiming for "Over the rainbow" with this one. Not easy with fingers like saveloys!

Thanks home player, was looking on sax.co.uk and they've got some lovely ones, haha screeching isn't the nicest sound... When I first started playing my alto there was a lot of that happening!

The ukulele lol strange thing to want to play haha! I can play "somewhere over the rainbow" sounds lovely. (Even if I do say so myself!) :)

My keyboard playing (organ) is adequate for hymn singing;
My voice for choral singing (bass), community centre choir & leading worship;
I use a harmonium for Indian Christian songs - like the one featured briefly on this evening's "Songs of Praise";
I occasionally sing at open mike sessions - Paul Robeson songs, protest & folk;
In private I play harmonica & guitar;
When my children were learning recorder, I learned also & we had a recorder ensemble.

That sounds cool... Very varied I must say lol, just bought a book actually wanting to try my hand (or mouth) at the harmonica, another window of opportunity opened with a bit of luck!

I've played bass guitar for a few years now and played 6-string on and off since I was about 10. I'm not very good, but I find it fun and that's what counts :)

I Play Cornet in 2 brass bands atm, in my school days played the flute, and like most people various recorders, wanted a violin but wasn't allowed, could knock a tune out of my sisters clarinet. Electric Organ for more years than I care to admit, but just tend to tinkle on that now as it's not a particularly social instrument and I enjoy the performing part of being in a band. I only sing if someone want a room empting quickly tho!! :lol:

Haha me too! I am partial to karaoke however I feel the crowd aren't so enthusiastic!

How come the violin was a no then? I wouldn't even know what an electric organ looked or sounded like!

How did u get into performing with a band?

My dad vetoed it didn't want "that raquet" in the house and put a cornet in my hands, he'd played a tenor horn in a brass band on and off since he was a lad. Electric organ think 2 keyboards on top of each other with another for your feet or have a look at a 60's band such as Procul Harum they had a "Hammond" As for playing in a band, I did a quick net search for local ones, emailed them and went along. That was about 6 years ago, and I'm now Chairman of one and play with another. Brass bands are quite common locally to me as alot of them were works/pit bands orginally, I knoe that there are a couple of wind bands (brass & woodwind) but they're a bit further away and don't generally have the same traditions.

Blackbirds have been quieter this year, & I haven't had the opportunity for my usual duel.

They whistle a few bars & wait for a response to their challenge. When I whistle in reply, they respond to me, & we can keep it up for a few minutes.
