Type 2 Anyone got any advice

I haven’t been to see any diabetic specialist. I see mention on posts about diabetic consultants and am embarrassed to say I don’t know they existed!

I was told my only option was a referral to an education class where I was advised they couldn’t answer my questions.
The dietician didn’t show for our class and the nurse delivering the class told me diabetic clinic would not accept my referral as I need to be on at least three medicines for diabetes to qualify for referral.
Is this true or is it different for each area?

I spoke to GP who says he can only refer me to education class as this is local process.

I spoke to a nurse in diabetic clinic when I was last there for my diabetic eye test I have diabetic rheinophy (spelling) and she said because I have had 2/3 of my pancreas removed due to cancer I need my cancer team to refer me to specialist diabetic clinician. Cancer team won’t refer me!

So I am told loose weight and all my diabetes will disappear despite my losing weight and sugar levels keep going higher.

The monthly treatment I have for cancer causes spikes and dips in glucose levels so the manufacturer (as I couldn’t get help anywhere else) told me buy a glucose testing strip and monitor my bloods when injection due (as would be at lowest) and after injection (as would be at highest) and see how low and high I actually go then report back to GP!

Anyone else have similar issues or any advice they can offer?

I have 1.5 stone to lose so as to be perfect weight and my BMI is 26 when ideally should be 24 maximum (I don’t feel that is too far out am I delusional?)

I don’t exercise much and can often spend days in bed due to arthritis, cancer and other conditions I have. It’s hard to distinguish one conditions symptoms from another but my cancer although advanced is slow growing and well controlled!

As you are post surgical removal of your pancreas, you are a type 3c diabetic, I believe, and surely ought to have specialist care - I often read that weight loss cures diabetes - but I'm not convinced.

Hi @Majii I beleive that as A DIABETIC,
the referral to a class is automatic in UK.

for T2, it's a desmonds course or similar.
for T1, they have there own (bertie ?) as they take insulin so the course i think is more involved.
as t3 (?) on insulin i'd think that course IF none other was available would be appropriate.
Obviously the cancer treatments impact on that, but to my mind THAT makes education even MORE essential not less.

Best wishes for finding a way forward,
do believe @JohnEGreen may be of some use, sure john (forgive if wrong ) is treatment caused T3

If not he may still be able to offer better advice then i, re treatments/courses you should be invited to.

I agree with not being convinced by weight loss curing type 2
- I was two stone heavier and my Ha1b blood test (is that correct can’t get my head around all new terminologies) was lower than it is now I have lost weight but I still have a stone and a half to loose (it’s so difficult I am medically retired and sit home most days)
Interested to see you and others mention type 3 diabetes will look into that

You need to look into type3c diabetes, type 3 is different.

Hi
I looked it up and for not so high glucose which apparently mine is (highest I have had is 13.3)
the way to address type 3c cause by pancreatic resection is loose weight, change diet and exercise so as to reduce glucose levels
it also mentions pancreatic replacement enzymes. I have been given these called CReon (it’s basically pigs pancreatic enzyme and I don’t really eat animal products but guess will have to start)
Also my glucose is high in morning, it’s been higher than it has been a couple of hours after a meal and chocolate. This apparently is my glucose levels dipping at night and liver releasing unnecessary insulin (stupid liver) but if liver can release insulin to compensate for dip in glucose why can’t it be clever enough to release less to compensate for spike in glucose
I am monitoring my levels now so will see how they are around time Injection that causes spike in glucose is due and immediately after
Thanks again❤️

I would have thought that you would require ongoing expert advice and treatment for your condition, just in case your situation alters, so you already have contact with people who can advise and monitor.
From what I have read the replacement enzymes can make a big difference to well being, so do take them if you need them.
