Hi all,

I have been a T1 for just over 2 years now and ever since diagnosis I've noticed the following happen quite a lot. Has anyone else experienced any / all of these?

1) I regularly leave my chemists looking like I have taken half of the contents of the place with me
2) People keep asking me if I am a low sugar or a high sugar diabetic when I tell them I'm diabetic
3) The same people tell me that if I control my eating then I won't end up a T2
4) Strange men play with my feet once a year
5) My other half assumes I must be having a hypo if I am pis*ed off with her for anything
6) Younger relatives ask if they can watch me inject and then tell me it's disgusting
7) My old 'little plate' cupboard has evolved into my diabetic cupboard
8) Suddenly I've noticed that nearly everyone either is or knows a diabetic person
9) Every few weeks I get a letter saying someone needs me to pee in pot or give blood
10) You seriously contemplate taking out shares in the company that manufactures Dextro's
11) Instead of having nice suprises like finding money in the pockets of jeans you haven't worn for a while you instead find Dextro's or if you are really luck some jelly beans or a tracker bar.

Just wondered if this is normal.

Hi JC,

1. Yes - They call it my shipping order.
2. Similar - Ignorance is bliss.
3. See No 2.
4. Yes, along with a good look at other bits too.
5. Most definitely YES!
6. Yes.
7. Yes, but it's getting too small now.
8. Yes - Becoming rather too common really. Think I'll give it up!
9. Yes - More precious than liquid gold.
10. Yes - and Boots.
11. Yes - but usually too manky to eat.

Diagnosis = Normal T1 diabetic :)

I have got into the situation where I order a repeat prescription once a month so normally leave the chemist with a carrier bag

I have a bedside cabinet which is being taken over by diabetic stuff, and will soon be looking for another drawer

Yes everywhere I look there seem to be a packet of dextro tablets

No matter how hard I try I alway find a foils top from the needle cap somewhere it shouldn't be

I have a collection of empty test strip pots thinking they will be hand for something, but have not found the something yet.. And for some reason I also have a collection of the glass insulin cartridges, again be handy for something :-)

So... All the above sound about right :-)

Yes! I didn't realise how much a fun a visit to the chemists could be. Especially when I visit the US, I need a special case for all the meters / snacks / gadgets I buy. It's like diabetic porn.

The answer to that depends on whether I'm low-carbing or chocolate-hobnobbing.

2 is greater than 1 so it must be worse

I've never heard of 2, but I have had a couple of idiots helpfully 'informing' me, straight to my face, that I'm not a "severe" diabetic. I really don't understand how much more severe than type 1 it goes - is there a type 0? And I seem to have somehow discovered that half the world has either a type 2 diabetic grannie, aunty or cat. Which is all well and good, but I don't have type 2 diabetes, I hardly know anything about it, I don't want to talk about it, I'm not in the slightest bit interested in it and I couldn't actually care less.

Hi jc,

I had a giggle when i read your post

Most of those things happen to me a lot especially 1-4-5-10-11.

Its a very good way to describe a t1 life - for me anyway

All sounding pretty familiar.

Worst one is going out in the rain with dextros in your pocket then putting your hands in and finding the resulting sticky mess.

what do you say to them when they say you're not 'severe'???
this whole post made me laugh out loud. 100% spot on. In fact, this whole thread does.... Fallenstar's discarded strips on the moon especially.

Funny post, all of them. I have a shelf for diabetic stuff too (needles and test srips) but it's not taking over the rest of my storaging, and i have diabetic basket of apples...
I never buy any glucotabs and never carry any chocolates.. If i have a chocolate in my bag it does not wait for a low. If I feel low I go into search for a shop, which i find in every 6th step i make.
Everyone does seem to know a person who is diabetic after all. And every non-diabetic person seem to know much more about condition than I do..So stupid of me to get sick like this..gosh!

Haven't heard No 3 so far but definitely the rest.
Usually they say I "don't look like a diabetic", especially one who's "so bad" that I need insulin.

Great comments, thanks for the laughs.

So so true, all of them, and dont you find that the"normal people" just dont get it!!, I think it must be a bit like being a wizard like harry potter, The Wizards understand the wizards, They also understand the muggles, but the Muggles, they just dont get the wizards ,do they!

Does anyone also get raging hunger, after eating a good meal? so much so you could devour the entire contents of the fridge, even though your still full?

I know exactly how you feel..I felt like this half year ago, when i was newly diagnosed..i was taking too small background insulin dose and injecting rapid acting one too often to fix my BG.Somehow it made me unable to stop snacking. Even though i would manage to get my BG right by bedtime, I would always get up very high. That was my mistake, yours might be different.
My nurse could not help me, but yours might..

Thanks Ausra,
Oddly i visited Dr today, my sugars are very well controlled and last HBA1c was 5.5 I never hypo, and rarely go above 9.0, I was diagnosed november last year, by luck, aswent to see Dr with a wrist problem and sent for tests and mot because I was 50,
HBA1c was 17.5 and told that i should be in a coma, However I never felt ill and had very few symptoms, ketones were3+ and glucose in my wee also, so kept in acute admitions unit for a week ,i was well cared for during my stay,
My palate has changed, and so sensitive to sugar tht i can smell it when my childen walk past me with an ice cream, and going to the cinema now is torture,as the popcorn sugar smell just sends me craving for food, and i mean really really craving,so much so that i need to eat the fridge and anything else i can place my hands on, and just to make it a bit worse, if Im hungery ,Im miserable and bad tempered, which doesnt help,! so does anyone has any ideas as my Dr and DSN cant give me an answer ,

Paul
