Anyone suffer from Dry eyes?

I have dry eyes and was prescribed a spray which was working great but after about a week I’ve developed an allergy and my eyes are now really sore, GP said to stop using the spray and don’t use drops and have given me antihistamines. Someone mentioned heated eye pads I wondered if any members have used these and if they work. I’m a bit desperate as my eyes water so much with the dry eye I struggle to see properly a lot of the time.
 
Hi there. I suffer from dry eyes but mainly at night. Waking and feeling like daggers are in my eyes isn’t very pleasant, and your symptoms sound distressing too. My GP has prescribed an ointment called Hylonight which I apply just before bedtime and it works a treat for me all through the night and next day too. Drops did nothing. Try that. Hope it helps.

I know, I have lots of conditions. I have been using prescribed eye drops hypromellose for about 10 years. Part of my allergies. It mainly happens at night. I was once prescribed a sort of gel to put in my eyes overnight. Made my eyes itch and I woke up in the morning with festhers from the down pillow stuck on like false eye lashes. The drops help, use them when I wake, which is when they are most dry, and antihisamines.

Have to be careful not to rub eyes when irritated. Scrathed cornea once, very painful. Dry eyes get infections easily.
 
I tried all sorts of drops and found they only helped a little, then the hospital prescribed Hylo Forte for day time and Hylo Night at bedtime (if needed I can use Hylo Night twice during the day as well).Hylo Night gives you blurred vision for a short time, but soon clears (for me anyway). They're both preservative free which means you don't develop an allergy to them, like you can with other drops. Central heating and gas fires dry my eyes out like nothing on earth, so not looking forward to winter even using the above. I've not tried heated eye pads, but I think they'd dry my eyes out more.

I get them prescribed, but if you're desperate to try them, you can buy them over the counter or online. I think the night one is about £12 from memory.

You've got my sympathy as know how painful dry eyes are. Take care.

I used the heated pads for blepharitis during a rather bad flare a few years ago, the kind where you add in wet disks of cotton to unclog the little pores in between your eyelashes, get the quality of your tears back up to par. For me it helped, but so did the hypromellose and the antihistamine drops. I still have to use both drops, especially in dry weather or when the tree pollen are attacking me again, haven't needed the mask since that first flare though. One drop to fix the allergy from the pollen, the other to soothe my eyes that feel like they're all scratched up. There's more eyedrops out there, and anti-allergenic ones too, (I'm on Altriabak and Artelac) so it might be useful to have a chat with your chemists'; they might know an alternative to help, as one of the preservatives used in the most common drops, can get an allergic reaction in quite a few people. I guess it's cheaper though? I don't think I would've fared half as well if I'd only used the warm mask, but yeah... It did make a difference. Was very soothing as well, whenever the pain got a bit much.

So... Use the mask, but also, do talk to the People in the Know about a change of drop brands. ;)

Also, if your eyes are weepy all the time, maybe put a tiny little bit of vaseline under your eyelids. The salt from your tears can accumulate in the creases, and for me that resulted in nasty little open wounds. Bit of vaseline and that problem was sorted in no time.
 
Thanks for all your replies guys, really useful, I’ve got to avoid anything like drops etc at the moment until it settles down but some good recommendations from you all to try once it’s cleared up, one eye has cleared up quite nicely but one of them isn’t improving and is looking worse, this one is where the GP thinks I had a tiny cut on the eyelid and some stuff got into it.

I’ve noticed this morning that I now have a bit of psoriasis developing on that eyelid, which is probably from the “trauma” - that’s getting to me more than anything because I’ve never had it on my face even at my worst and there’s no cream they will give you for that because the skin is so thin there :(

I’m going to try the heat mask and as @JoKalsbeek suggests a bit of Vaseline on the eye lid, it’s all I use on my psoriasis anyway

I have FED and take several eye drops : prednisolone , sodium chloride drops and sodium chloride cream. I was on loteprednol, but I am no longer taking those. Although the sodium chloride is prescribed to draw out the excess fluid from my endothelial cells it dries my eyes out with resulting dry eye discomfort so I use ‘HydraSense‘ for dry eyes. I chose those because they are preservative free solution. I see you can get HydraSense in the UK.

I have meibomian gland dysfunction.
All the stuff I use is preservative free.
I have a couple of things prescribed by the eye specialist. But during Covid and lockdowns they were not always available and when they were available, they now made my eyes very itchy as though the ingredients/contents have been changed. By this time I've gone onto Amazon UK and I was trying a whole load of different eyedrops and gels, et cetera..

All preservative-free.

Currently I am using, and sticking with because I am happy with them.

I have punctal plugs inserted in both eyes, to try and make the tears come...

I wear wrap around sunglasses/driving type glasses/or these ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/DEX-FIT-Protection-Adjustable-Protective/dp/B0BYC7BFQW ) to try to keep the moisture in, especially with wind, fans and central heating...and that blast of hot air that comes from above that the shopping stores have when you walk through that front door in cold weather - this absolutely wrecks my dry eyes.

A humidifier helps too. I also used a small one, by my bedside, all summer

Think it depends on WHY the eyes are dry.

I’ve got the one which makes my eye feel that it’s got grit in it.

Optician explained that it’s a sort of matter that gathers between eye lashes ..and then solidifies.

If so, a heat mask could logically help, if it helps it disintegrate the matter.

Tried that but not always successful (but much more relaxing than I thought.)

He also recommended HYCOSAN which is a temporary solution.

But I’d try and get your reason diagnosed first.
