Anything other than Statins?

I have the diabetic nurse calling me on Friday. No doubt to discuss stating. Is there an alternative? I know they reduce the bad fat but conversely have other side effects.
Apologies for the heading predicted text.

Current views are mixed.
My view is that blood tests can't show good and bad fats.
The main measure is HDL ratio to total lipids.
Theories about good and bad fats are currently under review and high levels of fats in the blood may not be as bad as originally thought.
I am against statins having had some bad reactions to them.
Worth doing a bit of research before taking them long term.

I will look up lipids and the ratio. Hopefully she will talk through the results with me.
I hope she does. It is absolutely your choice on whether to take them or not. I decided against, and my surgery is a bit confused that my cholesterol has subsequently, on their measurements, fallen to its lowest ever recorded level.

Thank you. I find them so pushy. They laugh at me when I say no thank you. Great to see you Colesterol drop. Was this through diet?

I wasn't trying to lower my cholesterol because I don't actually think it makes any difference - 80% of what you have is made in your body anyway. I have been on ~20g carbs/day for over three years and sorted my BGs and excess weight. The cholesterol just happened.

I am concerned that your email today contained a link to an article about statins that reflected the NHS/MHRA advice which I believe is highly questionable.

I’ve been on one for about 3 years now, my body has the genetic thing that means I have high levels and no matter what I eat it makes zero difference. I was against them but the risks of me doing nothing we’re not worth taking, my mum died age 54 with heart disease caused by the same undiagnosed condition and I guess I just want to go on a little bit longer than 54. Ask questions and see if they’re right for you and not just a quick fix to something you could resolve on your own

Yeah I think each individual is different. In your case it sounds like you need them. I'm 31 and they tried to give me statins when I was 29. I said no because my cholesterol is in the okay range and hadn't ever been high but out of curiosity I decided to try and lower it even more by myself and I did :) I cut back on cheese and relaced normal butter with the benecol one.

I've been given every statin known to my Dr & when I take them within days I'm in agony in every muscle of the body.
It starts in my legs & works it way around my body. The Dr has offered me an RNA jab for cholesterol instead. What happens if I have the same reaction?
It's not like I can undo the jab. No way am I risking it.

I also took two different statins (forgot which ones) and both gave me cramps in my legs within a couple of weeks. My cholesterol was below 5 and was told by my GP and nurse I had to have them as heart conditions are in my family and, as I'm an Asian, more susceptible.

Haven't had statins for years and my cholesterol tends to be around 5 or 6 on most occasions.

I'm comfortable with my decision, but everyone needs to make up their own minds. Just remember Google isn't always your best friend!

I can't take statins as they give me really bad muscle cramps. I now take Fenofibrate micronised 267. Still get cramps but not as bad.

That’s just probably answered a question for me, I get really painful cramps in my lower legs that are so painful I can hardly move. 10/10 on the pain scale but doctor has always said it’s nothing to worry about and sent me on my way! I guess I should talk about trying a different statin

Hi @Lisa5

I also have been pushed down the statins road just a week ago, yet to start taking them, however it was explained to me as a perimenopausal woman that we naturally produce high levels of cholesterol throughout our child bearing lives as we produce off spring and these are the building blocks for life, so when we hit menopause due to the hormone imbalance our levels increase which is why many women are put on statins around this time, personally I am going to take them and see for myself how it affects me, as with any medication there are potential side effects but unless you take them you won't know, so if it doesn't work for me i'll just stop taking them.

Yes my consultant has put me on them. Not picked up the prescription yet. My reading was 4.89.

Statins not only increase atherosclerosis but also increases type 2 diabetes. You should be monitoring your Triglyceride/HDL ratio, this should be below 0.8. We need cholesterol it is essential for life, it makes your hormones and immune system.
