Sorry, had only just read it and wanted to comment as the majority of opinions were not focused on the things that were worrying me about these police custody posts. Just wanted to put it out there.

Others lack of knowledge about diabetes always concerns me. Those who know a bit often have misinformation.
I've only recently been diagnosed as type 1 and still learning a lot about my condition, and these are the types of scenarios, where other professionals, especially the ones who are supposed to be safeguarding us are the ones that scare me. Not that I drink a lot and certainly don't condone anyone getting in to my car under the influence.

Some sound advice someone gave me recently, and that was whether your hypo or hyper if you are in your car either sit in the passenger seat if you need to put keys in the ignition, or remove the keys and put them on the passenger seat (as I've never been hyper, perhaps easier for me to say). This shows you are in control of the vehicle, however this is not to say that you would have avoided being arrested, but may have supported your argument that you only accessed the vehicle in order to get your kit and test.

Does carrying a card in a wallet / purse help at all? And would the custody srgt have noted this when checking in your items?

Oops, just realised that the original post is from last year... the thread had been highlighted through my FB feed and thought it was a current conversation!

Sounds crazy law or no law just because they have been on a course its them that need to be brought to justice, some police are ok but some just dont give a **** seeing drunks and abusive people every day, so you had a drink and accidently forgot your meter, they just follow the procedures just like the NHS with no common sense or care. maybe they wanted something to happen to you so you could go to hospital and be out there hands. They do have to deal with some idiots on a daily basis but they need to have common sense, you tried to get your stuff after having a few beers which is common sense but being refused and delayed doctor is ridiculous i can imagine the anxiety going through the roof and theres no need, dont think is your fault, you didnt drive the car and sounds good reason to charge the phone etc just because there police there not above the law get some names and numbers and make a complaint big time.

Even tho I have no first have experience of this I can imagine it happening!!! I was chucked out a supermarket by security whilst having a hypo and was accused of being drunk as I was confused, shaky and a bit incoherent. The security were not interested in my explanation. I complained to the supermarket and they said they would look into it. Heard nothing since. I Evan imagine this wad a stressful and harrowing experience but I am not going to criticise the police.

Just to finally draw a line under this post, I was found not guilty? The magistrate noted that this should never have come to court and awarded me a defence costs order for my £3,000 defence costs.
Also I made an official complaint re my treatment in custody, which the IPCC have upheld and my legal advisor is in conversation with the police on an out of court settlement.
Finally, to those on this forum that condemned me from the outset of my original post I will be giving my compensation to a diabetes which one I have not decided. Also I am working with a charity to better educate the police and others re the symptoms of Diabetes.
I will not be posting again on this forum.

I think you are an embaressment to diabetics that really care for themselves and others....

Cailesmark - I'm really pleased you posted the outcome, and pleased that the justice system worked on this instance. I think it's great you are working with the police with regards to diabetes education, a great way to move forward. Hope it creates a better awareness of the dangers.

I'm sad you feel you can't post on here again, this forum is a great source of info & diabetic 'community' - it's usually supportive, I for one can't understand all the negative response when there was clearly a lack of police education about correct care for people with diabetes.

Thank you for being so honest, and I hope you reconsider using this forum.

Hmmm - this Is starting to resemble the post of the aggressive dunk and disorder lady. You were found not guilty of what? Were you not charged with being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle? Your first post admits guilt!

Please please please, I really find the issue disturbing, and can't see how moral judgements are required here.

Realise 'drinking' is a divisive issue but the post isnt about asking for opinions on whether he was right to have a few drinks and forget he didnt have his bits. Doesn't anyone ever have time off carrying every item in their diabetes arsenal????

I know some of you will want this thread closed, but crikey, can't anyone else see its a real issue (police ignorance to diabetic hypo/hyper and how serious either can potentially be) that merits awareness? DKA can and does kill.

Excellent - I'm so glad to hear you've been vindicated, and I hope that the police have learnt some good lessons from this as well. It's very generous of you to give your compensation to a diabetes charity, and hopefully they can put the money to good use educating the police and others. A very scary thing to have gone through.


Type 2 on Metformin, diagnosed Jan 2013, ultra low carber, Hba1C at diagnosis 8% (11mmol), now between 4.5 and 5.5 mmol. 20kg lost so far

I agree with donnellysdogs. A sensible person people feeling sorry for themselves and blame everything, even been drunk, on diabetes, are imo pathetic. Man up and take responsibility for your own behaviour and actions and accept the consequences. Imagine if you'd drove off and mowed down a couple of children. I'm glad the police prevented that from happening as it sounds like you were plastered and hadn't got a scooby. I hope you have learned a lesson here, but then again gloating about getting off with a crime, I get the impression you have not. I don't want to be tarred with the same brush thanks.

I agree with what you think about drink driving.

Nevertheless you seem to be the one having a pop.(I mean showing anger that may loose respect)

When something does not add up it does not mean the maths are wrong, just a mistake.

Yet the more I read your thread the more I totally agree with you.

The Durham remark was meant as a joke, ie: "here we go again".

Interesting thought that I'm going to lose respect, if I am, it doesn't bother me. I don't get pie-eyed and out of control as I know and accept my limits. I don't drink and drive, in fact I stopped driving permanently from last year and the bus, the metro and the train. I get pi$$ed off by people carping on and using diabetes as an excuse or a licence to blame their failings on, it is absolutely pathetic and I see and hear it time and again and I am just making a factually-based statement on my own personal experience. It is such a lame act seeing people in the bar crashed out and blaming diabetes. No wonder many people can't be ***** to swot up on the condition.

Roy, have a good morning, this isn't aimed at you at all. I admit the topic annoys me and I'm just venting, mate.

He wasn't driving. He wasn't intending to drive. He was getting his kit from the glove compartment and charging his mobile phone in order to ring for a taxi. He was acquitted of any crime, and granted costs. His complaint to the IPCC was upheld, amount of compensation yet to be decided.

It really isn't hard. Why do people find it confusing?
