Type of diabetes
Type 1
After recently being rushed into hospital with DKA and newly diagnosed type 1 the last 4 weeks have been a very steep learning curve. I have one question that I can't find much info on. When I sleep I have woken up on a few occasions sweating and my blood sugar levels very low. Was wondering is this normal and if not what can I do to prevent it ? . Thank you

Hi David,

That sounds like a hypo to me.

As I'm T2 on diet and exercise only, I have never experienced a hypo, but my husband (also T2 diabetic and on medication) gets them from time to time. He usually counteracts it by swigging down some full-sugar cola and then having a carby snack. There are T1s on here who will be able to advise on your dosages.

Hello David and welcome to the forum.

Are you testing your blood glucose levels when you wake up, also what time are you waking up ? It sounds like a hypo to me, so this would indicate your basal insulin needs reducing. Night time hypos are to be avoided at all costs so please call your Diabetic Nurse or team as soon as you can to talk through reducing your insulin to avoid this re-occuring. Please let us know how you get on.

I have an appointment tomorrow, with being just out of hospital and very new to this I have set insulin levels my nurse advised me to slightly adjust them. I am testing my blood, always about 2 am. Will keep you updated. Thank you for your replies.

Take your bg meter along with you together with a bg diary if you've kept one, it can take a while to get the basal/bolus doses right so don't worry, 4 weeks in it's early days yet.........

If you're waking sweaty with very low blood sugar, then that definitely sounds like a hypo. Have some glucose tablets or sugary Coke or Lucozade, and maybe something like a biscuit after. You may want to test again after 15 mins to check your levels have come up before you go back to sleep.

Hopefully, once your insulin has been adjusted to suit you this shouldn't happen as much at all.

Thank you for all the advice lots to learn I think.

A good book to read on Type 1 diabetes is Think Like a Pancreas, it comes highly recommended on here and for good reasons too :)

Agree it sounds very much like a hypo. Glad you're seeing nurse tomorrow. We're all different but I always have a small snack of my bg at bedtime is vaguely low. Good luck with it all. This is a great place to find support and wisdom.
