Ok, now I understand the question better :)

Most of us Type 2's are told we don't need to test, this is rubbish, we're told this because of the cost of the test strips. In order to maintain tight control on your blood glucose levels you MUST test, there is no other way to do it. Most of us self fund our meters and strips, and a lot of us use the SD Codefree which is available on Amazon, can't remember the cost of the starter kit (meter and 10 test strips), I think it's about £15 but the test strips are £7 for 50, the cheapest on the market at the moment

I've been looking at that earlier, but after I downloaded the NICE guidelines and saw what the DVLA were saying, I think that at least everyone who drives should get prescribed test strips. My BG earlier was 4.8, but I felt fine. Does that mean I shouldn't drive? But then if I hadn't tested I wouldn't have known it was 4.8 and potentially decided to go on a drive from Lands End to John O'Groats! I was talking to a so called "professional" earlier (pharmacist) who told me I've got it all wrong. Type 1 need to test to get their insulin level right, but type 2 never need to test, which is why they have a hba1C test. When I said that you need to test to see how you are reacting to food, she said I've misunderstood what having diabetes type 2 is. She said when you eat your blood sugar goes up but it will come back down again so there's no need to worry about it. As long as I don't eat cakes or biscuits I'll be fine!

It's a bit unfair to hijack Nosher's thread, but I will say this -

The next time a so-called HCP tells you that you don't need to test ask them if they drive. When they say yes, ask them how they know they're keeping within the speed limit, obvious answer is the speedo, that's regular testing. Ask them if they take their car to the garage every three months to have their average speed checked, obvious answer is no that's stupid, but that's your HbA1c....

I love beans on toast too, but I haven't had them during the last six months.
When I go to stay with my friends in turkey, they make a dish called dry beans. Basically, dried beans, cooked with onions, tomatoes and herbs. These are probably better for bg in the long run. I may give them a try. :)

And I bet a dash of chilli would be nice with them!!

I agree, when I first started testing my wife was embarrassed by it but when family and friends started asking me to test them she started to change her mind, now she positively encourages me to test. We went to a new Greek restaurant in town yesterday because my wife wanted to see what Greek food does to my bloods (I had to pay of course!), results were good
Greek food is surprisingly BG friendly, since it's mostly fresh vegetables and meat. Skip the bread, potatoes and filo pastry if you're low carbing and you'll be alright! My personal favourite is lamb kleftiko... mmmmmm

I just googled lamb kleftiko, it looks delicious! I'm going through a period of re-trying foods and testing as some things that used to spike me don't seem to anymore, a good example is pastry, shortcrust and filo seem to be ok for me at the moment....

My friend makes something similar - she calls it big beans so I guess it's her version of Gigantes Plaki. She uses tinned butter beans and makes a tomato and onion sauce with some oregano and garlic and tinned toms and puree, pops the beans in an ovenproof dish, topped with tomato sauce, seasoned with black pepper and some chopped parsley. Then she tops with crumbled feta and bakes in oven till warmed through. Lovely warm with grilled chicken or fish.

I've just love butter beans, you'd think that because of my aversion to anything dairy, I wouldn't touch them! I going to defo use that recipe and test what it does to my BSLs!

They looked like a haricot bean , which I think is what baked beans are, or at least something similar.

True.

I must mention that I watched one of my favourite films the other night. It wasBlazing Saddles. A really hysterically silly funny film. I just go into pleats of laughter and my sides hurt, when the cowboys are sitting around the campfire eating beans! It making me smile! First film I got on VHS!

Yum!! :). Nothing wrong with canned beans such as those. You can get cans of beans that contain three different types of bean. All good, although I haven't eaten any beans since diagnosis. Might give them a try soon.

Even though you will get a small rise in BSLs by eating beans, it is the sauce that contains a lot of sugar. Beans are full of protein, roughage and they are a pulse, which dieticians insist are part of your diet.
