I got a text from my Nan saying it’s about an artificial pancreas? Unfortunately I’m going to have to miss it but if it’s good I’ll watch on catch up

The 'artificial pancreas' consists of a blood glucose sensor and an insulin pump which is controlled remotely from mobile phone. It's being trialled with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The phone app has an algorithm which learns from an individual's data and predicts how much insulin will be needed.

It’s not great TV. There’s a very dumbed down view of Diabetes to start with, then they talk about the pump, sensor and phone app.
As I understand it, the Cambridge AP uses a 640G and the Enlite sensor with Florence controlling it. It’s not very different from what Medtronic have released in the 670G certainly doesn’t have the features that OpenAPS, Loop and AndroidAPS have.
It uses a black box learning algorithm, precisely which techniques I’m not sure, but it seems to work and as long as they can get something that doesn’t cost the earth into service then great.
The biggest difficulty with commercial uptake on any system in the UK, whether Medtronic or Cambridge is the cost. Until CGMs are routinely prescribed, AP systems can’t be. And CGMs need to reduce in cost by 80% for that to happen.
