Michael Moseley in a new programme.
In the first episode

1. Researchers run an experiment to discover whether an hour's extra sleep could have radical health benefits.

2. Can we be fat and still be healthy?

3. How clean are our hands?

4. Should we be taking a low dose of aspirin every day to prevent heart attacks and strokes?

5. There is a unique form of brain surgery to stop debilitating tremors.

If it is anything like his previous health programmes it should be worth watching.

How ckean are our hands ??? I am firmly of the beleif that todays sterile environment mentality is of serious detriment to health as peaplebare no longer hardy enough to cope with moinor even illnesses and infections. Especially those that where brought up as kids in a house where bleaches and dissenfectants where use to kill everything one every suffice. I saw an advert the other day for clothes washing powder that was antibacterial and disinfecting. It also made out that it is the only way to properly protect you child/baby I find advertising like this tottaly disgusting, grossly missleading and extremely dangerous. If childern and infants in particular are not exposed to the outside world and wha it has to offer then they will have no tollerance for it and will live a life of illnesses and will be weaker for it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr it does make my blood boil

I'm hoping that the hand washing reveals that soap is better than antibacterial hand wash. Am also interested to know what the "shocking" discovery is.

I personally will not prejudge aspects of the programme.

Should be interesting and will set it to record

I'm with whompa regards this fixation to try and live in a sterile world, its madness and is the principle cause (along with misuse of antibiotics) of the rise of superbugs and resistant strains of MRSA. "That which does not kill us makes us stronger" is especially true in the microbial world.

I will probably watch it as I so enjoy shouting at the TV.

Sent from a melting iceberg. help!!!

Thanks for the heads up on this one CC

I will be watching it - it sounds interesting .

Anna .

Thanks for the heads up on this, I will definitely be watching.
Re Aspirin to prevent strokes and heart attacks I am seriously biased having read years ago about the preventive measures it gives I persuaded my Mum, whose blood pressure was through the roof and not responding to medication, to take the tiny daily recommended dose.
Enter officious GP warning of the dangers of taking aspirin -'it could cause a stomach bleed' - and Mum dutifully stopped taking it. Three weeks later she had a major stroke and has never recovered. You can stop a stomach bleed but you can't undo stroke damage.
Angry? You bet. Grrrrrrrrr.

I strongly believe the old ideas were best. I'm 70 and I can remember hand washing with carbolic soap and bedding being boiled in the old scullery copper. Bugs .. what bugs? we all grew up ok without all these modern biocides etc.
I will be watching just to see if any of the old cleaning methods get mentioned.

I found it a really interesting programme and am looking forward to next week's episode.

Pleased that soap turned out to be the best hand wash, something I have always felt was the best approach.

We wonder why Dr's give conflicting advice but seeing the two experts being interviewed about aspirin, they both had valid advice even if they did not agree. Who to believe?

The sleep project was also good but how can you make yourself sleep longer? I usually get 6 hours and feel fine and cannot stay in bed once I wake up.

Hope others enjoyed it as much as me.

I too have trouble getting the extra hour(s) If I don't get a decent sleep I'm cranky and feel low or am I having a low?
The aspirin is certainly debatable, I take this for increased blood flow and do not have trouble with bleeds etc. I take the slow coated type to prevent stomach problems.
Good programme, have watched it again.

Seems I am the only one who watched Episode 1.

Episode 2 this week deals with,

Are vitamin pills money down the loo?

Should we be signing up to private health checks?

Will antibiotics cure back pain?

Does getting cold make you catch one?

Should the presenter take statins?

Hi CC I found it very interesting and it just goes to show that good old soap and water is the best :) I'm a terrible sleeper, just getting a good couple of hours would be heaven. Looking forward to tomorrow night.

Does standing more make you healthier? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24532996 This article suggests it lowers blood sugars.

Watched Part 2 last night.
Anyone else see it?

The debate on statins still left me wondering who should take them.
The vitamin pills was as expected.
Private health checks were shown not to benefit everyone.
Standing more does seem to make you healthier.

Next week, the last one.

Could trees be the answer to air pollution?

Is there a cure for hay fever?

Are smoothies good for you?

Is coffee bad for you?

Should more women be taking HRT?
