Bedtime Panic!

Hi, I'm type 2 but not on insulin. I'm new to all this and just tested my blood glucose before bed and its 91 (5.1) and it's re-tested the same. I have only been doing the keto diet for 11 days. Lost 7lbs in 4 days and then nothing else since. I am 280lbs.

My blood sugars have dropped from the early 200's, 11 days ago, to 117 and 122 average today but this 91 reading is a bit low to go to bed? or isn't it? I've panicked and eaten a couple of Hovis crackers, some baby tomatoes, butter and Philadelphia but I'm sure that's not the right thing to have done.

I know some diabetics have a bedtime snack to avoid this problem but is it the same when doing the keto diet? and if so what is best to eat if you get low sugars before bed?

I'm not in Ketosis yet, reading said 0.7. I'm trying to stick with 10% carb, 25% protein and 65% fat. I saw the GP this morning and she is happy for me to do the diet. But because I was out I didn't eat my planned lunch and tea and my carbs have been lower than normal. Having eaten these biscuits my carbs eaten today are now 54g, 288 calories over my limit but the ratios look better now.

I'd be grateful for any tips and advice on keeping safe! I really want to do this diet but don't want to go to bed on low numbers x
11.30pm and 6.6....

I shall risk some sleep ....

Hi @Claire1963
Ok firstly you are aiming to get your blood sugars lower by eating keto so 91 is a great level to go to bed with if you're not taking any blood glucose lowering meds. Personally I would have given a small cheer and not eaten anything.
With a ketone reading of 0.7 you most certainly are in nutritional ketosis. Are you using pee sticks or a blood monitor to measure?
Carbs and calories are very different things.. I'd initially aim for cutting carbs down to lower levels and forget about calories for the moment. In the early days of ketogenic eating you want to aim to start burning body fat for fuel. This will happen much quicker if you cut out almost all carbs. Try to have less than 20g per day if you can.
Edit to add is there any reason you are using US readings for your blood sugar?

Thank you, that's reassuring. I do have metformin 500 x 2, twice a day. I am also on a Victoza injection, which is a liraglutide, slows the release of food in the stomach to reduce spiking. My GP said we may have to stop that eventually but am wondering if I've got low enough glucose levels I should go back and see what she thinks on that. I am testing with a keto meter, I thought optimum ketosis was 1.5 to 3? I am normally doing around 30g of carb a day so would going to 20g be too low if I'm in ketosis? sorry for all the questions..... things always seem more worrying at night.

For many people eating low carb is all that they need to do to get normal readings - I would suggest speaking to your doctor about stopping the medication and allowing your metabolism to recover naturally.
Victoza hammers insulin out of the pancreas - you don't seem to need that and it could be counter productive long term.

Thank you I'm seeing my GP again in 2 weeks so I will keep an eye til then.
