I’ve had a total of 9g net carbs so far today. It’s nearly 6pm and so thought I’d test my BG before I eat again, it’s 7.1 mmol/l all I’ve had since lunch is sparkling water. I give up. Why is it so high, I don’t understand :arghh:

When you say net carbs.... Please don't tell me you've been subtracting fibre? Because that's only in the US, where they haven't done that yet in the nutritional info... The rest of the world basically does, so the carbs listed are the carbs counted.

And even if all's well with the carb counting, you're only just getting started, so... Give yourself some time. Stress, the heat, lack of sleep/nightmares/anything, and yes, even fasting, kan kick up your blood sugars a notch if your liver decides to "help out" by dumping glucose.

Here is a slightly different viewpoint on your situation.
While a pre-meal BG of 71. isn't actually good, it isn't actually bad either. What now matters is whether you can have a meal ( I assume that you are hungry) which doesn't raise your BG by more than 0.9 at the 2hrs after 1st bite time.
I can't remember if I have done this for a dinner, but I certainly have for several breakfasts and lunches (back when I still ate breakfast).
Indeed often I found that a near zero carb meal 'turned off the glucose from my liver' resulting in a BG of 7.0 or below at the 2hrs mark.

No, haven’t been subtracting fibre, counted carbs as listed. Ah right so stress, typically 3 hours sleep a night and waiting for an operation as I have spinal stenosis, that’s why I need to get my hba1c below 69 so the procedure can go ahead. I’m on tramadol so will that interfere with the results? Thanks for the reassurance jokalsbeek

I’ve set reminder to take a BG test at 8pm. Let’s hope the 2 slices of hi-lo bread (which is only 5g carb per slice) hasn’t spiked me!

I personally don't feel that a single reading of around 7 pre or post meal is all that bad - check out our main site's blood sugar ranges for recommended levels.

As already mentioned it's not only food that can affect our glucose levels - and it seems that many newer T2s seem to have had the fear of God put into them in the belief that they've apparently caused what they see as "bad" results. Certainly many of my higher levels are related to issues of health ot stress, and possibly due to me now owning a pancreas well over 3/4 century old. But seeing some 7s (or occasionally higher) has not prevented me from getting mainly lower pre-diabetic level HbA1cs for well over 9 years now, over half that time by diet alone.

My meter saves up to 90 days worth of test results, and most usefully this data enables me to set myself target ranges for fasting, pre and post meals or combined results over various time periods. For me my "time within target" figures are much more helpful overall than any single figure can ever be.

Can you download the readings from your meter to put into (say) Excel?

My meter is a Contour Next and I used to upload its data to Bayer's own software on my previous, now dead, PC , but don't recall ever using it for my target information which is readily accessible via my meter so I've not bothered transferring it.

Bayer has since been taken over by Ascensia Diabetes Care UK , so you could check their website regarding current software (and get a free meter out of them too...):D:D
