Yesterday I started testing properly after months and months of not checking my BG. Needless to say I was more than shocked and angry at myself for having let things slip so much

Before breakfast: 16.0 mmol.l
+ 2 hrs: 13.8 mmol.l

Before lunch: 9.7mmol.l
+ 2hrs: 11.8 mmol.l (had about 20mins brisk walk at lunchtime)

Before dinner: 8.4mmol.l
+2hrs: 8.9mmol.l (had a dance class before 2hrs were up. not high impact but still)

Before bed: 8.5mmol.l

Total carbs consumed yesterday: 80g

This morning before breakfast: 14.5mmol.l

I am trying hard not to go on a guilt trip as it would serve no purpose. What I want to know is....is it possible to bring readings like these down through low carbing. I know the GP nurse is going to give me a deservingly right telling off but I really want to stay off insulin so I need to know what to tell her.

thanks
Clay

Hi. 80g is quite low carbing so it looks like you are doing well on that front. What meds are you on and how old are you? Some of us are struggling to keep BS down even with a tightly controlled diet and varying meds. My GP told me off a couple of years back for not having a normal diet. My response was that thru my meter testing I know my BS would rocket if I had a 'normal' healthy diet and asked her what my options were. She added a further med, sitagliptin, which has helped a bit.

My levels on diagnosis a few weeks ago were in the 20's, after a few weeks of lowish carbing (I aim for 100-120g a day) I regularly testing in the 6.x's 2 hours after meals.

Unfortunately I didn't have a meter all that time so don't know exactly how quickly they came down

I should start by saying 'Hello' since this is my first post here!
I have done much the same as you Clay, took my eye off the ball and my readings have done the same.
Have your readings got back to normal yet?
I would like to know more about why it may take a few weeks as the east man said.
I had hoped it would only take a few days!

Hi Harpo

I am afraid that I have had a few set backs...I find it very hard to control my eating...so I have not tested the last few days. I am trying to get back on track this week. I just need to make sure I last more than a few days :( I HATE feeling that I cannot control my eating....

Harpo, I can only imagine, that it takes a couple/few weeks to get the excess sugar out of your system. But if you are putting very little sugar/carbs into your body, your would think your Bg levels will naturally come down. I know mine have

Started in the 20's down under 6.5 at +2 hours for all 3 meals in around 8 to 10 weeks. Now at 12 weeks if I see a 6 I get irritated. Low carbed initially around 50g now around 75g.

Thanks for the reply's guys. My readings are reducing, but slower than I want!
I know what you mean with the eating Clay, it isn't easy so just do your best most of the time!
For me to stay on the straight and narrow, it's thinking about the consequences of not controlling my bloods as my job depends on it. Too high and I'm looking for a new career on the wrong side of fifty!
I took my eye off the ball once, I don't intend to do it again!
