hey guys I'm new to this forum but not new to diabetes unfortunately!

I've been type 2 for a few years now but have really struggled with coming to terms with it and being mature with it! (Always had the concept sticking head in the sand kinda thing)

But recently I'm trying to lose weight, so I'm drinking these shakes by protein world that contain no sugar, just sweetener protein and other things. So far my bloods have halved. The BG levels have dropped from late teens to about 10-12 at most.
So yeah kinda proud of that, the issue is I'm struggling with food ideas that don't contain much carbs in and I'm a vegetarian.

Just wondering whether you guys could help? I'm also wanting to try for a baby in the near future (hopefully) but don't want it to be a toxic environment for the foetus (my body obviously)
My bloods do go down to 8 but I wish they were lower. Do they get lower with time or am I doing it all wrong?!

Help please!!

Welcome
I will tag @daisy1 who will give you some basic information.
You might like to look at the low carb section on this site. Also I know some people here are vegetarian so they might be able to help you.

Hi @CharlotteLouise2468 Well done on getting your numbers down. You may be able to reduce them further by cutting down on carbs. What do you like eating? It may only take a few tweaks here and there. There is so much to eat as a low carb veggie so you wont get bored :)

I know I have made bad choices and it is hereditary? I think.

Anyway, such is life! I will have to get over it.
I love pasta but I've stopped eating that altogether really, I've used courgette instead and I'm waiting on my spiraliser to come in post!

I've not been eating carbs massively, only in my veggie meat alternatives and that's quite low.

For t tonight I had spring greens, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, one tiny Yorkshire pud, 2 veggie sausages and onion gravy.

I was on an early shift 7-2.50 so I was starving when I got home but just kept drinking squash and had q small piece of toast (livelife bread from wait rose 3.8g carb per slice)

How much is low carb intake per day? X

Sprialisers are great. I prefer courgetti to regular pasta now. You will have great fun with it! Everyone's carb tolerance is different. Your meter will keep you straight. I am happy at around 40g carbs a day. Some people can have more, some less. It's a personal thing.

I haven't been having much at all! Need to do some more exercise just lost the motivation when my MH deteriorated.

I just know I can't have certain things as my BG will go bonkers haha

The reason I tagged @Daibell is because he will know the right questions to ask you about your diagnosis and what tests you may have had. You are so young, on glic, low carbing and still not happy with your numbers, so maybe you are not T2. I am no expert. No offense, but best to be on the safe side if you are going to try for a baby x

I had tests done at the hospital and there were no keytones so they were dead sure I'm t2.

ive got a diabetic referral in a few weeks so ill ask them. I'm worried though they will judge me hb1ac as before I was eating well no sugar but was eating carbs :(

I need help before I can start trying.

You have plenty of scope improve your hba1c before the next test. It is the most recent weeks that matter most :)

I thought it was 3 months I was told? Appt. is on 17th November
And bloods have been good all week except for Thursday when I went out for dinner and realised that I can't even eat a jacket potato!!

They've been around 10-11 today down to 9 after I finished work.

So I'm pretty proud of myself!

Hello and welcome to the forum :) Here is the information we give to new members and I hope you will find the sort of advice you need in here. Ask more questions and someone will come along and help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you’ll find over 150,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.
There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates

Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

Another option is to replace ‘white carbohydrates’ (such as white bread, white rice, white flour etc) with whole grain varieties. The idea behind having whole grain varieties is that the carbohydrates get broken down slower than the white varieties –and these are said to have a lower glycaemic index.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-and-whole-grains.html

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to bloodglucose testing supplies.

I'm having 2 x veggie burgers, 2 x low carb bread slices and some salad for tea before going to work at 7 tonight!
So proud of myself!!!

I've just done my bloods and they're 5.8 before dinner :)

I've been quite poorly last night and today so hopefully they won't go to erratic

I was 8.9 when I woke up and after my breakfast shake 1.5 hours after that was consumed it went up to 14.1?!
But I've been feeling poorly so I guess that's why? :(

Protein world chocolate flavour slender blend
Barely no carbs contain no sugar :) all protein.

I have so much energy compared to before and cause I'm a vegetarian the protein is quite good for me!

I usually eat around a 30g carb meal for dinner and that doesn't spike my blood glucose too much. I have a bit of diabetic chocolate or some sugar free jelly for after as I do have a sweet tooth

Okay I'm in a bit of a muddle today!

I woke up with a blood sugar reading of 7 pre breakfast shake but didn't get to test my bloods until my break (around 15:00-16:00) when they were 7.9 but I've been munching on cheese on my break.
I then tested my bloods around 2 hours after I had eaten some salad with few bits of couscous (not much)and (3 hours after small bowl of mushy peas) at 20:00 (finished my shift)
And they were 8.6 (bit high I know!)
When I actually got home at around 20:30 they have shot up to 10.9?! But I've not eaten anything for hours?!
I have just retested them again and they are 10.2 45 mins later?! I don't know what to do :(
I've not eaten anything carby or sugary for ages and have been on my feet?!

Help please

I'm panicking x
