Been on metformin for a out 6 weeks now the diarrhea was quite frequent at first it has slowed down but hasn't totally gone and it gets bothersome when I have to drive long distance with no toilet I have my nieces graduation tomorrow and I don't want to get caught out short in the middle of the ceremony is there any suggestions to avoid getting caught short?

Hi
I suffer from Bile Acid Malabsorption also known as Bile Acid Diarrhea.
If I have a flare up in the sort of circumstances you refer to I take loperamide which is immodium by another name.
You can get these in tablet or a liquid format and will do the trick.

All the best

Hey @Juju13 I would just not take this tomorrow, it's affects are usually felt after taking it so not taking it means you shouldn't be caught short - good luck tomorrow :)

Just spoke to pharmacist and he says to just not take my morning one until after ceremony and spread the other two doses out over the day

Hi Juju13 Been there even had to put a hold on going shopping afraid to leave home but after a couple of weeks on Slow Release everything is OK. If your not on SR metformin I think you had better ask your Doctor. Best of luck

I'd agree about skipping your metformin tomorrow. Maybe also miss your last dose today too!

And if your problems continue, you might look at how many carbs you're eatng as too many + metformin can sometimes cause gastric upsets. But you should definitely also ask your gp or pharmacist to either try a different brand or go onto the SR (slow release) version which shouldn't cause so many problems. You shouldn't have to put up with long term regular diarrhea.

I just could not live with Metformin - for about 5 weeks I was only taking one a day, on two days I did take two but they were very bad days.
I stopped taking the nasty stuff and have stuck to low carb eating with enthusiasm close to desperation - if I had not got normal results in a year, I told myself I would have to start the tablets again. I have got to just about everything normal in 6 months.
All I got out of five weeks of Metformin was a professional quality carpet cleaner.
