as far as I can remember the only thing I did change was tablets for Arthritis because the usual ones stopped working so the Dr prescribed different ones.
Like diclofenic - they can be awful? Have you checked the interactions of the two? I'm sure you have - just saying in case you haven't yet ;-)

I am at my whits end for about 4 weeks I have had all these symptoms bloating, cramps, wind and water swishing about in my stomach. I have been worrying sick. Yesterday went the Dr who said I need blood tests to check everything in the meantime she wasn't going to give me anything so I asked she gave me buscopan, which has helped a little but I am wondering if it could be the Metformin , which I take twice a day and have done since I was diagnosed type 2 around October 15, has anyone else had this ? any answer much appreciated and thanks in advance.
I was on Metformin but could not tolerate it I lived my life in pain and on the toilet I had to get strong antacids from the doc for the pain in my stomach They also gave my hypos Now on insulin feel great

Hi lynn007, I too was at my wits end I have been on Metformin 500mg 2 daily since Jan this year. All the problems you mentioned above happened to me, in Feb I changed to the SR release ones and although the symptoms were there again they have now disappeared. It was an awful feeling believe me I know. If you are not on the SR ones ask your doctor to change the tablets for you, persevere and you will be ok in the end. :)

Hi lynn, sorry you are having a bad time of it. I replied earlier to you. I have never felt sick on metformin also I did get a bit of the runs but am fine now. Good luck. I do take 1 Omperazole a day, think this helps.

@lynn007 - I'm sorry to hear you're having digestive problems. In answer to your question can the extended release give you diarrhoea... yes it sure can. I was on metformin for 5 years and during that time I was on various doses and also was put on the extended release. Unfortunately for me I didn't tolerate the drug the entire time. I had a lot of nausea and diarrhoea. I've had digestive problems ever since to be honest. I don't know if metformin triggered my digestive problems or actually contributed to them. I do know I was perfectly fine prior to taking it. Maybe it was because I was on it for 5 years, I don't know. But my health has never been the same and I now live with chronic digestive problems and other health issues. Also one thing you may want to do too is check whether or not you have any food intolerances. I was put on the low FODMAP diet back in 2010 and I have to say that diet was nasty on my diabetes as I kept getting hypos. It could be because I was new to insulin back then as well. But I guess you could do an elimination diet following the same principle as the low FODMAP which is to eliminate lactose, gluten, and all fructans (that's a lot of fruit and veggies) from your diet. But only do that if you're not getting any relief... and speak with your doc first. I'm only suggesting this as it is one of the first things a gastroenterologist asked me to do to rule out food intolerances causing my excessive gas and digestive problems. I have a lot of gas in my body and I can't get rid of it. My oesophagus traps air and it causes chronic burping. Even my last chest x-ray showed my oesophagus was too wide. Anyhow enough of my experience.... but I hope you can get some relief. If it is the metformin it is probably a good idea to try and get put on something else that you can tolerate. I hope you can work things out either way with your doc. :)

People that can't listen to other people's opinions.
People that can't say sorry.
It is good to eliminate onion and garlic if you have wind/diaarhea. Low fodmap recommends that these two items are the worst. I did low fodmap and it definitely helped me...even though the problems may stem from the tablet you would be eliminating contributors to making things worse..

I have same problems, but i have found my remedy. I started using Dida and True Cinnamon from Swanson after meals and have found it very helpful.

I had indigestion and really bad bloating on the standard Metformin my doctor changed me to the SR one and wanted me to get up to 1000mg twice a day the normal dosage no good though the bloating started again and loss of appetite. I can tolerate 500mg twice a day and my appetite has improved somewhat again
