Woke up this morning tested my blood sugars which came out at 9.7 at 6.15am had 2 pieces of toast and took morning meds 2x80mg glyclazide tested at 9.30am sugars still at 10.5 how can this be and what can i do to correct it. I also take 2g metformin and 2x80mg glyclazide in the evening its just not touching it. Where do I go from here surely the BG should have come into normal levels by now.

Hi rhuscombe.

Those levels are not good and as you say the medication may not be having the desired result.
One possible cause for the high levels is what you ate the evening before ?

Can you give us some idea of your daily diet and any readings you may have ?

Hi,

I didnt have a lot to eat yesterday I was away so didnt have lunch, didnt have breakfast either I had a small portion of potatoes and 2 sausages. My sugars last night were 9.8 at 7.50pm didnt eat anything after 6pm. I had 2 pieces of toast this morning with low fat spread at 7.45am. Have not eaten anything since and my sugars have just fallen into the normal range just before lunch. So the question is do I have lunch and put my sugars back up or do I miss it until evening meal.

Hi rluscombe,

Missing meals doesn't help to reduce your blood sugar! All that happens is that your liver will detect that you haven't eaten anything and so will create glucose to make up for it. If you want to stop your blood sugars rising too high again then make sure that your lunch has very little carbohydrate. A small amount of carbs will only convert into a small amount of blood sugar, and will stop your liver from "helping out".

I agree, eat 4X/5X a day, small meals & keep on exercising. If you're a T2, has your MD given you a choice between metformin & janumet? I've had much better results with janumet & am presently trying to reverse my T2. So far, so good, with A1c down to 6.0 vs. 7.2 earlier this year.

Hi rluscombe
I've read through this thread and am wondering what dietary advice you have been given. Is it the plenty of carbs and low fat guff?
I ask, because you use low fat spread and eat toast.
I suggest you try eaing little and often as has already been suggested and eat foods which are as nature made them ( nothing from the Chemistry lab )
So meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese. Leafy vegetables and salads, a little fruit, primarily berries
minimise bread, potatoes, rice, pasta and cereals. Cut out anything with sugars ( or any ~oses other than Splenda)
there's plenty there for a healthy life and delicious meals.
You seem to be taking masses of Gliclazide. If it's having no effect, could you have destroyed all the beta cells? this does happen to some people and then there's nothingg left but insulin.
Perhaps you might discuss your controll with your care team?

I am currently taking metformin 4x500mg slow release 15mg pioglitazone and 2x80 glyclazide two times a day. I have consulted with my doctor who says that this had brought my BG under control between 5 and 7 mmol. He doesnt want me to go onto insulin as yet and says that he can up the pioglitazone if needed he feels that by using insulin my weight will increase so says to leave it as it is for the moment.

Be wary if he offers to increase the Pioglitazone. It has the unfortunate effect of making you gain weight ! I put on several stones on this med before finally coming off it and then began to lose all of that weight.
