Blood Sugar in High 20's and GP not helping, please advise

I sometimes do scream!

The only point I'd like to answer from your rant is the one re hunger. I think you may need to look at LCHF in a different light. Don't think of what you can't have, think of what you can have and fill up on that. Some of us eat more fat to stop the hunger pangs. You don't need to feel hungry. I think you said you don't like veggies? (or am I getting muddled?) Are there any you do like? I love veggies with butter.

I agree with jack about the ryvita too.

No, I don't like veggies. Could tolerate carrots and that's about it.

I really don't want to cut out the Ryvita, am liking it a lot and it's so easy just to put something on top of. It's something like a sandwich to me.

I agree that I need to look more deeply into what I can eat, rather than being negative about what I can't. But not liking much fruit and any veg is making it hard. I am eating lots of egg, meat, fish and salad.

I'm ok today thanks scottie, more concerned about you !

Don't be Clive, please. You have a big week coming up and you need to concentrate on being positive and getting well.

I may just stop eating altogether! Only joking. ;) It's not going to go away, so I need to tackle this head on.

I know your doing your best scottie ,keep at it and you will win through::))

it could have been a liver dump..you aren't eating enough..that isn't a breakfast :)
throw the ryvita away

I don't have breakfast Jack, just lunch and dinner.

I am sorry, and I am don't want you to think that I am ignoring your advice because I am not, I appreciate all help offered to me but the Ryvitas stay. If I hadn't have had a lot lower results for the last couple of weeks, I would consider throwing them in the bin but my results have been a lot lower whilst eating them. Apologies, I hope you can forgive me and still support me :)

it's just that those ryvita carbs can be used for much tastier meals:)

Oh I see, thank you. When the children are in bed tonight I am going to do some research, read your links and try to find low carb options of food I like, so that I can make meals more interesting. It's all well and good cutting out bread, spuds and pasta etc. but there is only so long I can live off omelettes, bacon, eggs, mushrooms before getting sick of them, which may mean I result in going back to my old eating habbits.

Does this make sense?

makes perfect sense, it has to be a meal plan you can happily live with for the rest of your life and why fats/oils are important to replace some of the lost carb energy

this is more about weight loss, but it also applies to diabetics
"Dr Eric C. Westman, MD and president elect of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, has 15 years of experience helping patients lose weight and improve their health using low carb. He has also helped do several high-quality scientific studies on low carb."

Do you cook at all, @scottie1 ? Meals from scratch, I mean ? There are literally 1000's of recipes for breakfasts, family meals snacks and baking all of which are low carb.

It does require some organisation planning and effort, but the habit of buying pre prepared stuff is a very modern ( and expensive!) option. Generations of ancestors did quite well on that , and we're probably healthier.

The veg that you don't like served up as is on a plate, you may well like when they are part of a whole dish. There is no need not to eat a satisfying and tasty diet whilst eating low carb .
What DO you like and miss ?

Apologies If this has already been covered, I haven't had the time to read through all 60+ posts , but the few I have read seem to be offering a good deal of support and advice :)

Yes I do cook from scratch but am now just doing it for my family, whilst I am eating omelettes for example. At the weekend the children have pizza etc.

I like and miss potatoes and bread, also pasta but have found out that potatoes spike me, I haven't had any bread in 3 weeks, nor pasta.

I like traditional meals but can no longer have them, also fish, most meats, eggs, mushrooms, cooked cheese etc. I am eating lots of omelettes, bacon, 97% sausage, eggs, Ryvitas, ham, pate. I like grapes but have cut them out as high in carbs. Plums, strawberries, i find raspberries too acidy. Can eat carrots and meat as part of a stew but it's hard making a stew without spuds. Chilli and bolognese. Mushrooms.

Can't think of anything else at the moment.

I'm grateful I have had lots of support, I can't thank people enough. Everybody is amazing.

Just to suggest substitutions you could make so you don't have to cook separately for yourself and family, what do you make for them to eat ?

Stew doesn't have to have potato, swede is a good substitute, and you may be able to tolerate sweet potato, some people can. It really is a case of lick it and see :D

I make hotpots, stew, pies, shepards pie, sausage cooked in gravy, pork chops and mash, brasing steak etc.

I really don't mind cooking them a different meal to mine. I know they enjoy them. I have recently started cooking a lot again so really don't want to stop as its an achievement for me.

This may sound like a silly question, but do sweet potatos taste sweet? I can eat swede in stews and things but not as a seperate item.

Looking at the links Jack provided, I think I may need to experiment and try new foods, and not stick my old, traditonal ways.
A little bit of effort could go a long way,.

The thing is, it needs to be sustainable as well as enjoyable, and you can get sick of cooking separate meals and they may make you feel deprived. There are some great low carb cookbooks on Amazon , sometimes for pennies in the " used" bit . I was surprised to see The Big Book of Low Carb Recipes in a charity shop recently, it looked as if it was someone's unwanted Xmas present , and I would have bought it if I didn't have it already :D if you like cookbooks rather than website recipes, type low carb recipe books in to Amazons search, and see ...

Shepherds pie can be yours, as can mash if you substitute the potato for cauli mash, which is actually better tasting , in my opinion , creamy and doesn't taste of cauli surprisingly. Meals made in a slow cooker or the oven are tasty, economical , and can be low carb too.

It doesn't have to be awkward or expensive, I buy most of my stuff from Aldi, including the ingredients I use to make my own breakfast granola ( make one batch and it lasts a week- approx 5g per serving ) served with Greek yogurt or Almond milk in my case .

Sweet potatoes - I don't really know how to describe them ! :D They do taste a little sweetish to me, probably equal to a swede, but I am very sensitive to sweetness having avoided it most of my life .

My husband makes a meat stew for us. He includes those mini-baby potatoes rather than ordinary ones. Each potato just cut in half. They stay firm and don't go mushy, so are easy to fish out, which is what I do.

Oh and in reference to an earlier post - don't get hung up about possibly needing insulin. There are many other options that your HCP's can try before getting to that stage. I hope you are keeping a record of your BG readings for your doctors appointment ? It is very helpfulfor them to look at and establish patterns and trends. It may be useful to ask to be referred to your local hospital diabetic clinic if you feel you are not getting what you need from your GP.
And, if at any stage you do need to go on insulin, it really, truly isn't the end of the world, There are more than a few Type2's that have, and got on much better as a consequence. Of course, I'm biased towards the positives of insulin as that is all I've ever known, and for myself and other Type 1's it's literally been a lifesaver :)

I am t2 on insulin, and I find being on insulin is not that bad, yes it does mean you have to eat at regular intervals and you have to remember to do your injections but I'm not on tablet overload, and yes I do watch my carbs but with care you can lose the weight and gain reasonable control of your bs numbers.

Thank you all for the meal ideas, especially stew which I love and in the days pre LCHF, would have had dumplings with it.

Yes, keeping a record of BG results to show GP, as I would imagine from reading other posts, that the GP may not like the fact that I'm LCHF. I have made an appointment with a 'nice' doctor, so hopefully that will be okay.

My BG has gone down to 18.0, so a slight reduction but not as good as yesterdays.

I do worry about insulin, the GP I am seeing on the 16th did suggest it when I first had a telephone appointment with him, this was at the start of my journey. I don't like the thought of both injecting myself and being insulin dependant. But really, I do not know a great deal about it so will read some more and be prepared should he suggest it. I am going to ask to be referred to the hospital as I do not feel I am getting the support I need.
