Bloods to high.

you mention weight loss was this planned or did i t just happen. being nosey what age are you.

Hi Paulus. Weight loss was planned but wasn't sticking to it just brushing over it. Iam 40 .

Just checked my bloods there. 18.6. *** is going on. I have been eating mega healthy watching carbs and sugars and I thought I would weigh my self. Up 2lb I really do not get this. Am not eating chocolate or cake or crisps nor drinking fizzy juice only water and tea. AARRGGHHHH

Hi @DUFC1 - sometimes other things can spike your blood sugars. Some quite unexpected stuff. Do you want put up a list of what you ate yesterday, then perhaps forum users can give you some guidance. How is your flu? (that can push up the blood sugars) and haven't you got a medical appointment today?

P

Hi Providence thanks for your reply. Yeah I still have touch of the flu with my throat on fire! Yesterday I eat was. Breakfast...2x poached eggs with 1 slice wholemeal bread. Cup of tea with dash of milk and water.
Lunch.. homemade soup. Tea of chicken breast strips with strips of courgettes 1 spoon of coleslaw and 1 Quran meat free burger (grilled) small. 1 tablespoon of yeo yogurt with small portion of sugar free juice. 2 litres of water throughout the day.
Yes have docs at 1030 today

Thanks for reply. Yes at best my eyesight is moderate atm mate. I am thinking that with having the flu sore throat which I still have is contributing to my BS being high. I have been eating mega healthy. Tonight I had a meat free burger. No roll though it was on a bed of veg! Who knew they were tasty.
Agree everyone been very helpful thus far. I was going around shopping today checking carbs and sugar on everything was in Tesco for 2h haha.
Never had a meat free burger but you can certainly eat a meat one if you prefer!! Dependent upon the quality of the burgers, meat ones are probably lower carb than the veg ones.

Definitely get a carbs book. When I was first diagnosed I happily munched through beans on wholemeal toast regularly (which is what I used to eat lots of) thinking I was the bees knees. Until I checked its impact. Lets just say I soon stopped!! There was at least 80 carbs in it and shot my levels into the teens and sometimes above!!! From a glucose level perspective I would probably have been better off WITH a small cake or bag of crisps as they all have fewer carbs!

Do u eat any bread of any substance. I can happily live without bread. Do u use full fat milk or semi skimmed. I read someplace full milk better but unsure so I use green topped

Hello DUFC

All the best for your doctor's appointment today. I hope it reassures you a little. I know that 18.6 gave you a bit of a fright today, but it does take some time for really high blood sugars to settle down.

Thanks for showing what you ate yesterday. Top marks for the poached eggs. The wholemeal toast would certainly push up the carbs. If you can do without bread of any kind at the moment that would make a difference. How about the coleslaw? What was in the homemade soup? With the breast strips, did they have any coatings? Sometimes shop bought chicken can have sugars on any flavourings. Even roast chicken legs can have sugar glazes etc on it! If you sliced up a chicken breast at home, you won't have these problems.

Check the yoghurt too. If it's a low fat one it could harbour all sorts of sugars that the food industry put in to make up for the lack of fats. Full fat greek yoghurt is GREAT. Nice if you chop up some nuts and stir them in.

Might be an idea to up your water consumption. You are a tall guy so try and get a bit more on board. I know it can be inconvenient, but if your sugars are high you may get very dehydrated. Lots of water is a good way to helping to wash it out.

And yes, full fat milk is much better for your tea. I have found it hard to change from semi to full, so I tend to drink mint tea with no milk.

In fact, full fat everything is good for you! Low fat = added sugar.

Hope these little hints come in useful.

About your weight, if you were dehydrated from flu and high blood glucose, then rehydration means that you are keeping more water in your body. Water is quite heavy, 1 litre is 1kg (about 2lb ?). In a way, this weight gain means you are getting healthier.

Flu always makes my bg rocket up. Even sugar-free throat lozenges increase my glucose levels, no idea why.

Hi thanks again for your reply, means a lot folks.
Where to start... doctor says my keetones are 1.1 so haven't moved. That's 12 week test showed my blood sugar as 115! Doc says it needs to be around 50. There were abnormalities in my kidneys but doc recons it's the sugar and is confident it will sort it's self.
Tea yesterday was plain chicken with no coating. Coleslaw was full fat but I only had w little bit. Tonight am having grilled haddock with wholemeal rice and courgettes. Then Greek yogurt with a little bit of pineapple.

Or in old money...

A pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter :)

Hi DUFC

When I was diagnosed, my 21 week test was 122, so we are about the same.

Might be worth having a rethink on the rice - even wholemeal rice can have a lot of carbs in it. Ever tried cauliflower rice? Feed some raw cauliflower florets into a food processor until it has a rice-like consistency. Put it in a sauce pan, add water to half the depth of the cauliflower and flavour it with a stock cube (i use lamb cubes). Bring to the boil and simmer for five minutes. Husband (non diabetic) loves that, says he prefers it to real rice now.

Pineapple can be high in sugar too, might be worth thinking about nuts or berries such as blueberries or strawberries instead.

Nevertheless, you are on the right tracks and your pills should start making some dents in those blood sugars before long.

P

Yes, I agree. You will benefit by eliminating rice from your diet, at least for now. It is very high in carbohydrate and will raise your levels, as may the pineapple. You would need to test before and after to see what happens.

Hi Providence again thanks for your reply. I used an app on the rice if only have a small amount Iam hopefull it will be ok. Pineapple I read on here is good in small doses I may have read it wrong and prob have. Am not allowed to drive for 2 weeks until my bloods are under control. That's what hurts me. Am away to look at recipes on here and see what simple ones I can make. I have tried cauliflower rice it's delicious.
Can I ask if your bloods are spot on now and how long it took you? Doc told me not to run before I can walk lol

@DUFC1 - I am afraid that my blood sugars can be erratic. I am going back to my doctor on the 26th of this month and am asking for a complete review of my treatment. One thing is for certain though, my blood sugars now (between 6 and 10) are much better than they were on diagnosis (between 18 and 22). Keep working on your carbs, some of the strangest things can put your blood sugar way up. I had some liquorice the other day, I had no IDEA it was packed with the sugar.

Great work!

P

ps. try not to worry about the driving. It won't be long before your sugars have settled down. Must be frustrating though.
