Hi all.
After hearing my 27year old daughter and my 84year old father have both got a cold this weekend.
I am off to my GP's tomorrow to enquire and book my annual flu jab...
Its that time of the year - coughs and colds starting already by the sound of my own family!
To be honest hadnt thought about this until hearing that both of them are in bed this evening suffering...
So I am making this a priority tomorrow, usually it doesn't give me any problems just a sore
stiff arm for a few days and slightly raised BG levels. Then all settles down again.
Get it done and out of the way!
Had my pneumonia one done 2 years ago - so wont be needing this.
Cant remember exactly when had my flu jab last year ? sept/oct ?
Feels like things have come around earlier this year though.
Anna.

Yeah, my DN said they were doing end of month and October. Never had one before, hope its ok and does not raise my BG too much.

Are all diabetics invited for a flu jab? I would prefer not to have one. I started on Echinacea yesterday though as I hate colds (I don't think I have ever had the flu).

My DN said all diabetics at my surgery get offered it and recommend it.

You should get a letter from your gp practise inviting you to have the flu jab due to you having diabetes, obviously it's not compulsory to have the jab so you don't have to take the offer up.

I had mine last Thursday after attending an appointment to get my bloods taken for Hba1c and cholesterol, I thought it would be to soon but the nurse said they were in stock and I could have it now to save me coming back in October

Hi Defren.
My DSN told me that poorly controlled diabetics are 'more' at risk of the flu with weaker
immune systems.
They are offered the flu innoculation to help protect them...
I was offered both the flu and pneumonia innoculation's as at that time in 2010 I was a
poorly controlled diabetic catching everything that went around!
Needed more than one course of antibiotics to help me battle things off.
I do still seem to take a while to fight any bugs/viruses off so I am happy to be innoculated.
If you prefer not to have one , that is your own choice and will be respected.
My mum is always ill after she has her's yet me and my dad are fine.
It is an individual thing whether you choose to or not to have it .
Anna.

I am going to get mine done soon, not really because of the diabetes but because of my asthma.

I am also going to tackle them about the pneumonia jab which I was told I would not be offered as I was not over a certain age, I think it was 70. I remember asking about this here on the forum after seeing so many others have been given the jab, I would have thought as an asthmatic who has been on life support a few times, I qualify!

Even more so as my immune system isn't the greatest after years of corticosteroids. Rather than me go trawling through the threads, does anyone know where I can get some info about who should be offered the pneumo jab, just in case of a disagreement?

Ta.

Hi ladybird.
The only reason I was offered the pneumonia innoculation is as I had - had a
septis infection AFTER contracting pneumonia .
Was 47yrs old at the time and it took me 10months to get over it all ...
Can you enquire at your GP's about if you could have it?
Anna.

Thank you all for the replies. AMB I shall have a read through your links - thank you. I think you may all have changed my mind. I am not in the slightest needle phobic, but I prefer not to have them, but as it seems a sensible precaution. I shall speak to my GP.

Thanks for the link AM. Anna, it was my practice nurse at the surgery that told me I didn't fit into the at risk groups.

Never had one, but I'm going to go this year - just because it'd be nice to get something out of the £2000 a year my GP gets for my diabetes.

(That and because I don't want to lose any running to a silly cold).

The flu jab will not stop you getting colds Stephen, and the flu is definitely not a silly cold as anyone who has had it will testify.

Thanks for that. Yes I meant a cold. I've had the flu lots of times (although I've never had a day of work sick in 20 years, so it can't have been that bad).

I have refused the jab for many years, after having it once which put me to bed for 2 weeks !
Yet another example of the stupid NHS policy of carpet bombing the plebs (check Andrew Mitchell) with, in my humble opinion, yet more pointless medication.

Stay off the dreaded stains too, after 18 years post heart transplant, all my tests ,scans, angiograms at Papworth are all good.

Feeling as fit as a butchers dog !

I'm having mine in 2 weeks time it's my first time having it as was ill last year when I could have had it at work. figure it's worth having it and seeing the effects as find it very hard to fight off colds and infections and where I work adds me at more risk of catching things.

Depends on the personal circumstances Chip..I had flu once and it put me in intensive care for a week as it exacerbated my asthma so much! I am exceedingly glad I get the opportunity to have the vaccine..undecided if I would have it because of the diabetes though. Probably yes, because I have had practically no side effects from the injection before.

I understand your point ladybird.
You could try not going via the practice nurse use your GP to talk/express your concerns with
"both" the flu and pneumonia innoculations first if he says its a good idea , then - the
practice nurse will have to do them 'BOTH' for you...
Sometimes it is best to speak with the GP first.

Likewise, had flu about 7 years ago and never felt so ill. My bg was slightly elevated for a few hours after last weeks injection but settled down by early evening.

I'm having my flu jab on Saturday, no problems last year apart from a bit tender where they had injected me. I was under the impression all Diabetics, no matter their age were entitled to the flu jab and the pneumonia jab.
