Can any of the forum regulars provide me with a recommended reading list?

Apologies if this is contained somewhere else on this forum already. If it is would some kind sole please post the link to it on here for me?

The book you mention above i found an excellent read Jim, I would also recommend the following:

Type 2 Diabetes -in adults of all ages by Dr Ragnar Hanns & Dr Charles Fox

Blood Sugar 101 - What they dont tell you about diabetes - Jenny Ruhl

Diabetes For Dummies - Dr Alan L Rubin & Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP (get the UK edition - if you are in the UK of course :))

They can all be bought on line from Amazon. I found it very useful to read everything I could about diabetes when I was first diagnosed, at first a lot of stuff went straight over my head but after a while reading the same information and advise it started to make sense and once that hapened I started to feel more 'in control'.

I'd go along with recommending Type 2 Diabetes - The First Year. It certainly answered many of my questions when I was diagnosed in 2008. For cookery books, that would be a more subjective and personal choice, but there are plenty of low carb cookbooks to choose from, if you decide to go that way.

Diabetes for Dummies - very apt in my case

Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year - An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed by Gretchen Becker (Author)

I have a few others in my wish list, but won't indulge myself until I've read these two, after which time I might be clued up enough to answer a few posts on this forum. 8)

Should stop me pestering cugila & sugarless sue for the weekend at least. :wink:
 
I went to our local library and explained that I was newly diagnosed T2 and could she please point me to some books that would be useful to me.
She gave me 6 books ranging from all about T2 and diet and recipes for diabetics.
Yet upon reading them all I find that 90% of the recipes have SUGAR in them and way to many carbs, These are recipe books for diabetics :shock:
Why is it so hard to go on the internet and find recipes that are perfect for diabetics who are on low carb diets?

Interesting Book By A Main-Stream MD

Although this book was first published in the UK in 2007, i just found and bought it
recently. It is the first time that i have discovered anything from a seriously,
main-stream doctor that states that Diabetes can be reversed.

WOW!

The Author is Dr. Neal Barnard, who is a clinical researcher as well as being a
medical doctor. He is currently Principal Investigator in a major study on diet
and Type II Diabetes. He is also Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine at
the George Washington University School of Medicine in the US.

The book title is, 'The Reverse Diabetes Diet'.

I have just bough this and am intrigued and excited by the idea, certainly
the author is a person to take seriously and for someone in his position in
the international medical community to put his name ( and reputation )
on to such a claim means that i, for one, am taking it very seriously.

I shall look forward to learning what other members think and am keen to
learn if any other members have read the book and/or have tried its'
recommendations.

Neal Barnard's diabetes diet is diametrically opposite to those of Atkins and Bernstein. A low fat vegan approach. He has published research in Diabetes Care (a mainstream ADA journal) comparing his diet with that of the ADA in a 22 week trial. The results showed improvement in glycaemic control and lipid reductions wit both diets but a greater improvement with the vegan diet Personally,I think it's probably a very healthy diet, but being an omnivore I think that I'd find it very hard to stick to.
This is the diet used for the published research
The vegan diet (10% of energy from fat, 15% protein, and 75% carbohydrate)
consisted of vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes. Participants were asked to avoid
animal products and added fats and to favor low–glycemic index foods, such as beans and green vegetables. Portion sizes, energy intake, and carbohydrate intake were unrestricted.
