Bread ... why?

I cant have rice, or pasta, or many potatoes, but at least I still have wholemeal bread. My one or two slices a day make it all worth while : )))))))

(yep, but I have other health issues, so it is important to my other health issues - its all about juggling)

I miss eating bread, as I used to eat around ten slices a day, sandwiches, toast etc.

I miss wiping up the gravy remains on my dinner plate, I never dipped bread fingers into boiled eggs as I boil the guts out of them till they are hard as I do not soft boiled.

So I make do with a couple of Mission Low Carb Wraps each day, it's surprising what you can cram into those for a wrapped roll.

As Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill would say, it's written in the scriptures it is.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from carbs.

In my 'hood, the jam buttie mines, feed the poor as well as providing work.
The diddy men, have great respect in solving the region's basic dietary needs.
Also eating scouse without a crusty cob, is taboo!

For someone with a wheat intolerance, I would rather do without and it has not bothered me that much!
( please let me have a chip buttie!)

I have often wondered why we see so many threads about bread?
I gave it up and don't miss it but many people spend ages trying to find low carb bread (which must surely be an oxymoron).
So why do you think we need to eat it?
Habit, lack of imagination or does it fill another role (intentional pun) in our lives? I'm interested to have your thoughts.

I gave it up completely for about a year and didn’t really miss it. Was unaware of any low carb alternatives (didn’t even th I to look) but became curious about the Lidl rolls after all the discussions on here. I tried them, loved them and began to eat them occasionally. For me they are convenient and quick when I haven’t planned anything and get hungry (they defrost in a minute in the microwave). Could easily live without, but enjoy them About 10 left in the freezer and since they’ve been discontinued, my last 10!

Blimey sugar and lettuce that’s a blast from the past! We used to put vinegar and sugar on lettuce in a salad when I was a child!
My wife tells me stories of her childhood regarding sugar on brussel sprouts? (i never knew this was done.)
I liked spouts as they were as a kid. even before diagnosis...

Yuk!

Still my childhood weird sandwich combo was chocolate spread with dairylea spread and pickled onions.

Brought back memories of a "dare game" played by us kids. we used to make the worst sandwiches with whatever ingredients we could find? The rules were simple. finish the sandwich first without crying off.
To be fair, my mates omitted anything they deemed sweet for my sake. But thinking back now. discounting the bread. who knows how many carbs was actually in that monster.!

I never ate much bread, so can't say it has been a loss in my life. We never had packed lunches as children, and even when I was working and sometimes taking packed lunch, it wouldn't be a sarnie.

Exceptions would be a bacon sarnie, with excellent butcher's bacon and baguette from the Patiserrie in Deshaies, with a freshly churned butter and a decent cheese.

Sugar butties, dip butties and "connie-onnie" (AKA sweetended condesensed milk) butties were all part of my chilhood treats courtesy of grannie, and I vaguely remember both syrup butties and sugar and lettuce sandwiches too...

Cinnamon and sugar toast which remained an occasional treat most of my adult life.

But as sugar was rationed during and for some time after the war these were generally special treats that didn't involve very much sugar rather than every day scoffs - and "real" sweets also tended to be in rather short supply.

All this bread porn has me nostalgic for cheese butties dunked in Heinz Tomato Soup. (My packed lunch as a teenager.)
Or a bowl of scouse with crusty white bread, lots of butter.
Simply irresistible for me, so not allowed in the house, seeded wholemeal toast, cold with thick spread of Irish butter.
Toast is the ultimate comfort food.

My mum used to make us golden syrup sandwiches! On white bread of course! Makes me feel sick to think of eating that now but I guess we enjoyed it at the time!

Golden Syrup butties on white bread were my and my dad's bedtime supper when I was a child. I loved them, and was still eating them when I was a student. Golden Syrup was a staple, and in my student days came in very useful for adding to coffee when we ran out of sugar. God knows how my teeth have survived as well as they have!

What have you started @bulkbiker ? This thread has turned into a competition to describe the most gross childhood sugar extremes. Golden Syrup sandwiches! I had a lot of sandwiches as a child but at least they were cheese or fish paste or Spam.

I'm afraid to admit that I can remember golden syrup sandwiches too...!
