Bread ... why?

My cousin used to eat apple and sugar sandwiches.

A guy I worked with would often bring Roll mop herrings and Stilton cheese sarnies. Dessert would be those pink shrimp foam sweet things.

Back to my childhood and .....dripping on toast was a firm favourite.

We need a "eugh" symbol.

My mum used to make us golden syrup sandwiches! On white bread of course! - I can remember eating that too - also condensed milk sandwiches of white bread was a treat too. That was another life though, can't imagine wanting one now.

Go here as there are plenty to chose from such as this one

Alas, bread, and my intolerance (unknown till diagnosis) to bread/wheat/grains is one of the reasons I am here with rooted blood glucose regulation. I loved reading the funnies and the descriptions of favourite bread dishes, and all that sugar on bread many of us had as children, when eating Anglo saxon fare. But there is a bit of a tragi-comedy side to it, isn't there?

I remember my son as a child ballooning on the 'fairy bread' he got every day at after-school care, when he sat in front of computer games for a few hours every school day eating it, before I saw what was happening. (And in those days I didn't know what to do about it, as in good substituting. Knew nothing about nutrition.) Fairy bread is the little coloured sugar candy pieces/hundreds and thousands, on white usually margarined bread. An insulin resistance bullet. My poor boy's body! (Now a man with weight and probably insulin resistance issues that I contributed to without realising it. All that toast!)

Now I cook keto bread roles, (with seeds rather than grains. Sour cream, olive or avocado oil, almond flour.) And dripping in butter and with bacon (sugar free from my local butcher) is a great-on-the-BG substitute that I really appreciate.

OMG how delicious! Almost worth dying for!!! (Not worth having my feet cut off for, though.)

I think one of the dirtiest things that can be done with bread is a jam butty deep-fried in batter.

Popular in Scotland apparently, but when I was little and living in Liverpool, there was a chip shop which used to make them.

It goes without saying the bread was white - I'm pretty sure if you asked for wholemeal they'd kick you out for "getting all nutritional on them".

I used to have sugar sandwiches ( white bread obvs) when my mum was out.
Also wierdly, for supper sometimes we’d have a dry weetabix spread with butter and sugar sprinkled on top.

Ye gods - dry wheetabix? Who thought that one up?
