Anyone have any breakfast ideas for type 2 that doesnt shoot their bg up. Lol i bet everyone gets so bored of the bog standard weetabix or wholemeal toast and boiled eggs. Would love to hear some ideas!

Bacon eggs. Omelette . Scrambled egg with cheese on. Coffee and cream. Cold meats.
Forgot, Frittata and if made night before it is great cold the following morning.

Yogurt (full fat natural Greek) with flax or chia seeds, occasionally a couple of berries.
Scrambled eggs or omelette with mushrooms and cheese.
Cheese, nuts and olives

Doesn't the weetabix and the toast make your BG shoot up?

Leftovers of yesterdays meal can make a good breakfast as well.
And no reason to stick to boiled eggs, you can fry them to, or scramble, make a nice omelet with added cheese or veggies etc.

Lupin pancake that's what I had today with sugar free jam (treat), didn't spike my bg. You just have to go careful with the lupin flour as it can give you reactions apparently. I have been okay with it. Cheese strings and some nuts. Or anything for me that I can grab from the fridge and run out the door ;)

I have recipes for pancakes made with coconut flour or ground almonds but don't do either most weeks as I struggle to get going in the morning!

I would only have a small slice of a lower-carb bread at the most, with cheese to make it more filling, but never weetabix. Instead, I have a porridge made with milled flaxseed with a little chia seed, some chopped nuts or seeds, cinnamon and a pinch of salt. I make up a week's worth. Cooked with boiling water, then stir in coconut milk and serve with double cream.
2 heaped spoons of milled flaxseed to one flat spoon of chia seeds. 180ml water (add more if needed). At first, I also added a flat spoon of oatbran but cut that down.

If I'm away in a hotel I have bacon, mushrooms and half a tomato.

Oat Pantry have a range of flavours for overnight oats, porridge and baked oats. The overnight oats are really easy to prepare the night before, the only issue is having to order online as not stocked in supermarkets.

I do like oats, but many of us find they make our BG shoot up fast and long so I avoid them.

my dietcian hasnt said anything about weetabix being bad towards the start i had weetabix quite often and didnt see much of a bad effect till recently, same with low carb toast it is starting to become bad even though towards the start i wouldnt see much of a difference. but recently had shocking scores and big rises and as a student dont find much time to make something to eat quick enough. going to have a good word with my dietician about weetabix and toast i just cant find anything quick other than eggs as i live with my family it all gets gobbled up quite quick. I am also religious so i dont eat bacon, pork or anything type of meat that is not halal. so yeah sometimes i even skip breakfast and indulge a bit more in lunch instead lol.

Eggs fried with sucuk is halal and at least as tasty as bacon and eggs, one of my favourites!

It's all about the carbs. Carbs raise our blood glucose, so the more carbs, the more of a BG rise you'll see as a rule.
How many carbs our body can handle is highly personal, so that's where your meter comes in handy.
And tell your family to leave your diabetic breakfast alone.

Do you like full fat plain Greek yoghurt?
It's the fastest breakfast ever (you can even spoon it straight from the tub) and with its 10% fat it's very filling.

Nothing wrong with that, works for me!

Hi

That bread is 9g of carbs per slice according to the info in the link. I know it says "no added sugar" but that's an old trick - there's plenty of sugars in it already. There are genuine low carb "breads" around which have lower carb content - downside is they are generally expensive, need to be ordered online, and are definitely a substitute rather than the real thing.

It depends what level of carb intake you're aiming for each day. If you're going for (eg) 120-150g then probably one slice of the bread is ok within the overall figure. If you're aiming for 20-30g/day then that's a huge percentage of your daily intake right there. Weetabix is I think around 70% carb, and if you have it with milk, there's carbs in the milk too.

I don't usually have breakfast, just coffee, and generally don't eat until much later in the day.

On the packagaing it says in of which sugars it says only 0.6g of sugar so i dont think it should give much of a spike. I need to have a few words with my endo nurses when they next phone i was to told to keep a low carb diet and keep a limit of 130g max but i eat way less than that anyway. Cheers for all the advice i will deffo take it all in. As a 19 year old its still just so confusing sometimes u think your doing things right and theyre wrong lol.

Sugar is just another form of carbohydrate. A teaspoon of sugar = just over 4gm of carbs, so the 9gm of carbs in a slice of your bread is the equivalent of over 2 teaspoons of sugar.
The of which are sugar's figure on the food labels are meaningless, carbs when digested will turn to sugars, in the uk the fiber is listed separately so it is the total amount of carbs we need to be aware of

The "of which sugars" is misleading and is intended to mislead you. If you read the whole thing it says 9g of carbohydrate per slice. All that 9g of carbohydrate turns into glucose when digested. If you're only counting the "of which sugars" then you will be grossly underestimating your carb intake.

I fully agree that 9g of carb on its own should not produce a spike. If you're having that 9g in combination with two weetabix (26g carb according to Weetabix) and 100ml milk (about 9% carb as lactose) that will total around 44/45g carbs for your breakfast alone. Are you sure you're eating less than 130g/day?

In addition, spikes are one thing to watch out for but a steady intake of carbohydrate will keep your blood sugar high all the time - it might not spike, as such, but you could be steadily running much higher than you might want to.

Yes thanks again for this advice. Thats the thing with diabetes there will always be fluctuations you just have to ensure your doing the right things and balance it out. Thanks mr kenny once again!

The dietician I saw knew nothing about remission or the 'recent' research into low carb. She told me to eat more wholewheat products and I ignored her. 3.5 yrs later I've been in remission now for over 3yrs and all the other bloods (kidney, liver, cholesterol, etc) are fine.
