Hi, Iam new to the forum, your advise will help me alot, when I do my blood test after exercise mostly walking and running for 30 minutes it shows 5.8, when I check again after two hours of taking my dinner it goes to 13.9.despite I had my medication.
I am 45 years old with type 2.
My regards

Hello! Welcome to the forums.

Do you get any hypo symptoms at all? I'm thinking this could be that your insulin sensitivity increases for quite a while after exercise, which causes you to hypo accidentally after a meal. This could then maybe trigger the liver to reduce sugars in to the blood to a such a high of 13+

Best thing to do is test half hour before exercise, then every half hour for a couple of hours after eating.

Good luck :)

Welcome El Badi,

I would have thought that you are probably eating too many carbohydrates in your dinner...

Put simply, carbs to sugar in your blood. Eat too many and it will take a while for your BG to come down to normalish levels. Everything else is second order.

What did you eat?

Stephen

Hi welcome, how long after exercise do you check? My BS will go from 5mmol to 9.9mmol after exercise (whether or not I eat beforehand, which I usually dont). An hour or so later, mine will then tend to drop pretty suddenly, under 4mmol, dont know if this helps, its a mystery to me x

Hi, Normally right after I finnished, ten minutes you can say.

Hi and Welcome,
I am type1 and have been for 36yrs, i am 42yrs old, on insulin 4 times a day amd 2x500mg metformin twice daily. Have you looked at the carbohydrate you are taking on board. If you look on this sight you will find carb counting regime helpful. As you are a type2 are you on metformin only. Exercise will lower your blood sugar but you must watch your sugar levels before and after exercise, may be also have a small snack before doing any exercise this may help.
Having high sugars on a regular basis and then dropping down to 5.9 can lead to you feeling as though you are in a hypo ( low sugar level) this is called false reading.
Hope all goes well. We are hear to support and advice but only by our own experiences, remember we are not doctors just long term diabetics, which will help others.
Take care
Tracey

Hi Tracey,
Thanks alot, indeed your experience will help me,and for sure I joined this form to share experiences, do you think 5.9 is an indication for hypo? today I had checked BS half hour before the exercise it was showing 12.

Whilst Tracy was quite correct, I think the advice might not be applicable here.

Firstly, the question is if your blood sugar rises after exercise if you don't eat (much) afterwards. If it doesn't, then your high BG was caused by too much food or too little medication, depending on how you look at it. Exercise may continue to lower BG for several hours, but that doesn't seem to be case here.

Alternatively, it is possible for exercise to increase your BG (as described by daisy); in that case I cannot offer any advice. A quick google search, however, suggests that this is caused by insufficient insulin as during strenuous activity the liver converts glucagon to glucose, which will raise BG levels.

Edit to add: if you are saying that you had. BG of 12 mmol/l before exercising, and 5.9 afterwards then I don't think a hypo is very likely. I'd suggest that you testing every 30min, say, during and after exercising would be more helpful than us guessing based on two data points)

Hi

I think your figures are typical of many Type 2s including myself when exercising and eating. A reading of 5.8 is good but not near hypo levels. It proves the point that exercise can help keep BS under control. The 13.9 level 2 hours after food is the sort of level I was having before my meds were increased; I was already controlling my carb intake. To reduce the 13.9 level you need to reduce your carb intake at dinner or perhaps your meds need to be adjusted upwards. You don't say what meds you are on, but I would suggest you need to discuss this with your GP in conjunction based also on your next Hba1C reading

More detail of what you eat and when would help.

To establish your normal background BS, you should test last thing at night and first thing in the morning.

To check the effect of meals you should test just before eating then two hours afterwards.

There is a very good guide to testing strategy regularly posted for new members of the forum.

Cheers
