Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Paul.
Welcome to the forum.
Have a good look around and ask all you need.

Looking at the Bg numbers I think you should discuss this with your GP ASAP as they are not good. Are you taking any other medication with the Byetta ?

Ken.[/quote]

Hi Ken,

I am also taking metformin sr but thats it. It does seem a bit drastic to cut all insulin rather than cutting back. I will discuss it with the doc though. My bg's have dropped to 11.0 today which is an improvement but still nothing like they were.

Thanks for the welcome.
Paul

Hi Blackdog,

If you are reading this topic starting from page 1 then I admire your perseverance, but can I suggest that you don't respond to questions that were raised 2 years ago as most of those posters will have left long ago!

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Just thought I'd share again - I spoke to diabetic team about higher blood readings and was reassured that as I was coming off insulin its not unusual to begin with higher results but they will come down in time. That said I am down to 9.1 today so things seem to be settling in the right direction. I will be going onto the 10mg dose in June and may add glictazide apparently. On the positive side Ive lost 6lbs since starting last Saturday which is rather pleasing. I do tend to slump energy wise by about 8pm - is this normal?

Paul

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Paul.

The energy slump in the evening may just be down to the higher Bg levels.
I know when mine were high I could sit down to read a paper and fall asleep - no problem.
Now the levels are all well controlled, energy is continual throughout the day.

If you are at all concerned though , discuss it with your GP.

Hi Paul,

Most doctors put their patients onto Byetta in order to get them off sulphonylurea meds like gliclazide. It does strike me as a bit odd that your doctor would want to add gliclazide to the mix at the same time as you will be increasing to the higher dose of Byetta, without at least waiting to see how you progress on the higher dose. If you do end up taking gliclazide then it is essential that you test regularly at least 3 times a day, because gliclazide in combination with Byetta causes hypos. Gliclazide also encourages weight gain. I would suggest that you have a chat to your GP about putting off the gliclazide until you see what results you get from the higher dose of Byetta.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi viv.

Hypo.
Just one thing to be wary of when taking Byetta, especially in conjunction with certain other meds.

Always make sure you are in easy reach of a sugary drink, Coke etc, Lucozade, Jelly babies (love them) anything that is a fast acting sugar. Once you are sure your Bg is risen. Then have a small carby snack. You can also get Glucogel on prescription. Make sure you get a couple of tubes.

I keep all the above in the house and in my car so am never far from help if a hypo happens when I am out.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi viv.
A glucose level below 3.0mmol/l indicates hypoglycaemia.

Some people experience symptoms when their blood sugar level is higher than this – eg at 4.0mmol/l. (Therefore 'four is the floor' for blood glucose levels.)

Here is a link all about Hypos and how and why they can happen:
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/fac ... garlow.htm

From my own experience, I begin to feel a hypo coming on at around 4.5 mmol/l which gives me time to do something about it. Have been down to 3.2 once or twice till medication was reduced. Felt absolutely awful.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Ken
Sorry I have not ben on lately just busy.
Went to DN and lost another 2.2lbs side effects dissappearing and feel mostly well. BS around 5/6 so I am quite happy. Nice to be able to chat to other suffers.

I am in 7th week of Byetta. On 10 units and 2 Metformin twice a day.

It has been a rough 6/7 weeks but well, worth the side effects. My energy levels have shot up. Now not falling asleep when I get home from work.

So to anyone new on Byetta good luck and give me a shout if I can help.

Sue (akela) :D

Thanks for the heads up Dennis, I will certainly have a chat with the doc. I am lucky to have found a very good doctor who is happy to discuss things properly, after having some rather old school docs for years. My bloods are slowly coming down on the 5mg dose - into the 8's now so hoping the glic wont be necessary after all.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi well my consultant was happy with my blood sugar results so is keeping me on byetta but i have had no more weight loss so he has put me on xenical 120mg but i am unsure when to take them with the byetta ... can anybody advise me please .. :?

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

The effect of BYETTA to slow gastric emptying may reduce the extent and rate of absorption of orally administered medicinal products such as Orlistat.

If such medicinal products are to be administered with food, patients should be advised to, if possible, take them with a meal when BYETTA is NOT administered.

The normal rules with Byetta are to take medication an hour before food or at least 4 hrs after the Byetta injection

As Sue says you need to discuss this with your GP or the person who put you on Byetta.

Ken.
