Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi jengoe.

There is no problem with drinking tea, coffee etc before you inject, Byetta reacts to the food you consume, not drinks such as this.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi NickR

My consultant told me to have the injection just 15 minutes before I eat as this would stop the sickly feeling. I have been doing this and feel fine. Just have to get up 10 minutes earlier in the morning for work to sort myself out but will be worth it I am sure.

I am only on my 4th day of taking Byetta and have read lots of positive stuff on here.

Good luck.

RWJ :D

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Back to the air bubbles...

I have been doing the flicking bit for a few days to try and disperse the tiny air bubbles in my pen, as discussed a few posts back. It didn't seem to make a big difference but I have now gone back to keeping my pen in our downstairs cloakroom which is the coolest part of the house (kept it there during the warmer weeks but had been leaving it in the lounge, but of course the heating is now on so I moved it back). When I used it this morning, no tiny bubbles, just one small one :D So I am thinking that although they tell you not to refrigerate once started on, maybe a cool spot away from general traffic is the key?

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi All - havent been around for a few days after my almost 'meltdown' last week

Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts:

Think I;ve now sussed how to beat the sickness (for me at least)
BG is still not where it should be on 3gm (split in three) Metformin and 10mg Byetta

Spoke to DSN today - she has suggested dropping th Met back to 2gm - split morning and evening and reintroducing the Glic 80mg morning and evening - has anyone else tried this?

thanks
Trudy

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi All, i was wondering if anyone could give me a typical day in their "byetta" life eg what times they inject, blood sugar before and after etc and also what youre eating?
ive been on it a few days and whilst it has reduced my blood sugar, it isnt in the normal range yet?

Im over the sickness bit now - yay!

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Been to the Doctors today to ask about Byetta. They told me there IS a trial going on at a local hospital, and they will get the hospital to call me to discuss going on the trial.

Anybody know what they are likely to ask me/tell me? What's my best chance of getting on this trial?

Hi musicman, yes the clicking is normal, it's just the mechanism of the pen working correctly, if it doesn't click then you've not completed the procedure, that's why it wont wind on for next dose.

Hi Patch.
There is a criteria for the prescribing of Byetta although quite often it is routinely ignored.

Basically you need to have been on max dose of oral meds and still have poor glycaemic control. Your BMI should be above 35 as well. There are other criteria but it is difficult to say what it is in each PCT and/or Hospital. Your best chance of getting on it is to fit the above as closely as possible.....if you get my meaning ?

It will also help that you don't have any 'hang ups' about injecting ! Twice a day. I have no idea why it is a 'trial', the drug has been around for a while now and has also proven efficacy for most people.
I hope you get on it, it certainly turned my life around since being put on it.

Best of luck.
Ken

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Not sure if its related to byetta but getting some abdominal pain and discomfort recently its been getting worse for months before I started on byetta though I think. Also notice that I have lost the hair on the lower back part of my right leg.

I am at a loss to know what this might be....? Please see your GP and discuss. This could be anything.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi everyone,

I picked up my byetta pen and needles today, start on it tomorrow morning. Feeling scared and excited at the same time.

Diabetes specialist doesn't want me to wait until after my holiday, so a bit apprehensive over the possible side effects. Really hoping its not too bad.

I had to inject myself in their office to show I could. It didn't hurt as such but did sting a bit for a little while after but I can cope with that if it makes me feel better and I lose weight.

Thanks for all the advice on here, its been invaluable. My specialist was surprised at how much I knew about the "lizard spit" - of course I credited all you guys and gals.

On the downside, she didn't advocate the low carb diet, preferring low cal but I'm going to give low carb a go (but probably when back off my hols).

Cheers all. :D

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Heather

I felt just the same as you did a week ago and I worried for absolutely nothing. I just felt a little spaced out the first morning and have been fine since. Not eating as much as before and I am really pleased about that.

Good luck and I am sure you will enjoy your holiday.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Thanks RWJ.

Injected myself this morning (only took 30secs or so before I could put the needle in!!!). Felt slightly queasy about 10 mins later and had bad taste at back of my throat (dont know if thats normal) but was fine after eating my breakfast.

If thats all the side effects I'm going to get, I'll be very happy :D although I'm sure I've just spoken too soon and will feel really bad after my next injection now

Checked my fasting bs (7.9) before injection. 2 hrs after breakfast checked it again - still 7.9 so think thats good?

Anyway, thanks again to everyone for all the support.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

I'm half way through my second pen. I was sick as a dog / parrot (choose your creature...) for the first three days, and I have had occasional upset gastrics since. But most of the time I hardly notice the effects, except that I have lost a stone in 6 weeks! :D

Hi Davec.
Welcome to the forum and the 'lizard spit' users area. Glad to see you managed to stick out your initial troubles with Byetta. As with ANY powerful drug it can have effects, but as you have found they are worth putting up with when you get good results. Well done. :D

Heather.
I hope that is all the effects you will get. Yet again another who is happy to give it a go and doesn't 'ditch' it because of a slight problem. Well done for getting over the injecting trepidation too. :D

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi

I have a quick question - I have a friend who is in need of a shoulder coming round tomorrow and wondered if a glass of Baileys and a little treat would do any harm and whether it would affect the Byetta.

Would appreciate any any advice.

Thanks.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi RWJ.

I think in the circumstances, providing you don't intend to drink the whole bottle and your treat is also in proportion. Go with it. It is one day and whatever effect it has has to be offset with the comfort you are offering your friend. Have your Byetta with the normal meals and treat this as a one off. :D

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Thanks Cugila

It is definitely a one off and only one small glass of Baileys, not the bottlle, though can't speak for my friend, but she is healthy!

This site is so helpful!

Thanks

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi

Just wanted to pop in and say that i have had no side effects with byetta that i started on the 2nd November,
Only one but i dont know if that is with eating healthily ( veg ect) or the byetta!!!!! I have been having a lot off wind.
I have lost half a stone in the last fortnight ,3lb this week and 4 last.
Not sure how much of this is down to the Byetta as i have been on a diet since 28th July and doing very well.

My blood sugars have lowered and i can see a significant difference when i compare my diarys.
All is good

Iain
