Hi everyone.ive been told I have fibroadenoma and need to have the cyst removed.my appointment is next week but I'm a little worried about my bloods.ive to stay hungry from 7am and my appointment is at 11.00am...won't my sugars go low by then?

agree with @mahola
if your background is right you should be ok with no breakfast and no bolus insulin--- stress may push your BG's upwards though !!

I was advised to halve my basal injection (I did a split dose & halved the morning one) when I had a late morning anaesthetic. Hope all goes well.

If you're concerned, you could get advice from your DSN.

I hope the operation goes well :)

Advice before any operation for any insulin controlled diabetic..

Have a practice run at home before.....

Check your bloods every 30 mins during this time.
Make sure you extend tge testing time.. I had an op and was promised to be first... and taken down 3pm!!

They will still operate up to a level of 13.0 in one of my hospitals... but the risk with insulin dependents is going unexpectantly low and needing something by mouth.....

Hope all goes well, but do some basal testing with normal basal
Insulin dose and see what happens... my ops have been big ones or stomach investigation ones so have had to adjust foods etc for days before.. so I always do dummy runs in those cases for at least 10days because I know their instructions for me arent tuned to my individual body. They just base info on standard average people.

I'm hoping to have another op at some point and again I will spend a lot of time fine tuning and testing beforehand if I get this op.

Have you told them you have type 1 and seen if they can fit you in earlier? Once you explain the issue most hospitals are quite accommodating.

Just make sure you notify the hospital at every opportunity (at the pre-op, and when talking to the anaesthetist and surgeon on the day).

I've had several ops and procedures in the last few years. If they're worried about a hypo, they'll just give you some glucogen.

As others have said, its more likely that your BG will be high due to stress and any inflammation.

Try to relax as much as you can (I appreciate it's difficult): do whatever you can to take your mind off the op e.g. Read, listen to music, watch tv, meditate (if that's your thing).

All the best @Saeeda

Yes you're right their advice is for a standard average person..I know my body and how it works diabetes wise if that makes sense.but yes il try to do the same as urself!thanks

Hi.yes they have all my medical details so I would have expected them to fit me in earlier

If your basal is at the right dose for you and you have no bolus insulin in the morning, you should be ok. They may go a little high due to the effect the stress of the surgery will have on you. Keep testing just to be sure.
that makes sense thanks

Hi
Good luck with yr op and hope that you dont have to wait too long before going to theatre.
Make sure that you take yr insulin, bg meter and teststrips in with you plus glucose tabs, jellybabies in case you feel a bit low in the ward and also some sort of snack stuff to eat.....just in case. It might be that you dont have yr op until the afternoon so if using bolus basal or pump, set yr basal to be about 6mmol if possible as you don't want to be going down to 4mmol or below on the operating table and need iv glucose to raise you especially if a sliding scale isn't being used. If you don't feel like eating an evening meal, ask a night nurse to make you some toast and coffee.

Yes, best thong is if your meter calculates to get your blood to a target level that you consider raising that target level for your pre op practices and the day of op...

Best check with your dsn / your pre op assessment what they will allow you to have as a hypo stopper.
Mine was glucogel only. Definitely no jelly babies etc. You dont want op cancelled for having a pre op hypo snack. Agree that you have hypo snacks ready for afterwards.... but unless you are actually hungry it is highly unlikely that you would need them afterwards for a hypo...

Are you being taken into just a day case ward?

Hi

pre op..... check with dsn or anaesthetist whether it's ok to treat a low bg with a glucose tablet but nothing else. Glucose tablets are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and don't tend to cause someone to be sick or choke so should be ok but always check first. My advice about jellybabies etc was after the op is over and back in the ward.
I downed 2 mugs of coffee in recovery and eat a nice fish Shepherds pie with green runner beans in the ward 1.5hrs later Didn't feel one bit sick so dont worry
