Hi All this is Baldtyke

I will be showing up as Scottydog as I am using my partner Andrenes PC and login just thought I would clear that up.

I have been low carbing now for three weeks and am due to have my HBA1c done on tueday. As I have previously posted and my sugars were up in the 20's and completely out of control and my prospects were looking very grim. However since loing the forum and getting the low carb advice my sugars have fallen dramaticlly and now sit in the 4-7 range pre food and only slightly above 8-8.5 after food, I have even hit several 5.5 to 5.9 scores so the low carbing is defeinatly working and I know it will be a job for life I am feeling all of the benefits already. So from an individual angle low carbing works for me.

Right, here is my question and this will now highlight my mega **** maths skills. I am ok on the simple carb calcs but when for argument sake you get a note on a packet that says per 100g there are 74.5g of carb but the actual pack size is 23.1 g what would the actual carbs be.

I am rubbish at maths lol and I keep seeing this type of calc and my brain wants to explode trying to work it out, is there a simple formula for small brained folk to make life easier lol

Any help would be magic.

Also my tummy is shrinking woweee my weight is coming down very very slowly but I am putting that down to my excercise which will be turning some of me into muscle.

More alert, more switched on, more active so all good stuff.

Cheers for the help guys

Tony

75 g in 100 g is 75%. So all you need to do is find 75% of the weight of your portion. Just multiply the portion size by 75. EG 23 x 75 = 17.23. So whatever the percentage of carbs, multiply that by the size of your portion. If you use your phone, you'll need to place your decimal point. Remember your answer is just a bit smaller than your percentage, unless your portion weighs more than 100g

Hi Baldtyke alias Scottydog.... :D

Bt.
The simple way to calculate this is 74.5g carbs divided by 100g weight which gives you the actual carbs per gram.
Then multiply that figure by 23.1g pack weight. The result is the amount of carbs per pack.
Simple really..... :wink:
therefore. 74.5 / 100 = 0.745 x 23.1 = 17.20 carbs per pack. :D

Hey Ken
You've done the Mathematician's method.
I went for the simple, always works one. for myself, I only estimate.

I am terribly anal about the maths involved when counting carbs :p I keep a small pocket calculator in a draw in my kitchen, just to bash it out. But yeah, Ken's method is the one I use.

X = carbs per weight;
Y = carb weight reference;
Z= weight of portion;

((X / Y) * Z) = Carbs in this portion.

Easy peasy!

Nothing anal about it at all, when at home I ALWAYS weigh to the nearest gram and do the carb calculations on my Palm PDA, using both methods mentioned here. I keep a 7 day food/bg/insulin diary on the PDA so it's easily done, and will soon be transferring it over to my iPhone - one less/more gadget to cart around, depending on your perspective!

I find the biggest problem is working out who to believe when it comes to carbs, the product packaging will say one thing my collins little gem will say another and the calorie, carb and fat bible will say another figure. Which is correct or could they all be wrong?

Hi Sid.

I have found this before and actually e-mailed Collins about all the discrepancies. Needless to say I never got an answer !!! I think the latest Calorie, carb and Fat bible 2009 appears to be the best as far as I am concerned. If in doubt I just take a sort of average and hope for the best. Most packaging is more reliable I think ?

That was pretty much my thinking too, nice to know another takes the same approach

I would take one look at that pack and put it down and run a mile. 75% Carbs is a lot by anyones standards. It wouldn't matter to me if I only ate a little portion - I'd still be aware that what I'd eaten was 75% BAD STUFF.

Sid - go by the carb bible - it is based on UK food tables. I have found alot of differences so I actually do not recommend the Collins book ! TBH I have never been able to determine who put the collins one together - the bible is compiled by qualified dietitians and real nutritionists!

I would always trust the carb values listed ON THE PACKAGE. I only use my carb book (collins) if it's fresh things (vegetables, meat, fish etc) that don't have carbs listed on them.
