i was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with level of 6.8 hba1c. my question is if i control my type 2 with diet and exercise will this level drop? or will it just not get higher. can you make it go down again?

Yes, you can lower it. How much depends on your current carb intake and how active you are. Exercise helps, as does reducing the amount of carbs you take in. Don't become obsessive though, too strict a regime is often difficult to maintain. It should be more a lifestyle change rather than a strict diet. Good luck !

Hi,

If you look at my signature you can see that it is possible to reduce your BG. However I guess it all depends on your diet pre diagnosis and after. Obviously I had a very bad diet before. Then when diagnosed I went with the old NHS advise of balance and the odd cake or biscuit wont hurt. Then I found this site, cut out most carbs, im prob classed as a very low carber, I keep it under 30g a day. Now I'm just trying to lose more weight, I don't think my numbers will get much lower without essential weight loss.

Have a good read and make sure your testing before food and 2 hours after that is the only way to know how foods affect your BG. I started off aiming for no more than a 2mmol rise in the after test.

my Hba1c i was told is 6.8 why its that so different to yours as yours are 106 to 36 i dont get why some people quote high numbers and some low

Yes, I dropped from 10% (or 86) to 5.5% (or 36) through diet and exercise. Most of the weight loss and drop in hba1c was in the first 10 weeks, loss of 20Kg and drop to 6.5% (or 48). It's taken 3 times longer to lose another 10 Kg and drop to the present hba1c.

But, I eat very well, I don't hold back. I cook everything from raw ingredients and vary my meals, 2 fish, two poultry, two red meat and veggie meal per week. I'll probably have to cut down the portion sizes and increase my exercise routine now but I am at least in a safer zone than I was before.

Mine's gone down since diagnosis in early September 2013. I don't get high BG ('spikes') any more and my early morning readings have gone from 8-ish to below 6. To do that, I have lost quite a bit of weight, cut out sugar and gone low carbohydrate. If I reverted back to my old ways, I'd expect the weight would pile back on and the BG levels rise again.

To get to the nub of your question, though (if I'm reading it correctly), from the posts I've read, the action I've taken doesn't always work (but I'd always suggest people try it and see for themselves), and I'm prepared for the weight loss and diet to become less effective, if the underlying cause of my T2 (e.g. beta cells exhaustion or insulin resistance) gets worse with time.

I total agree with all the above comments, I never had a clue what to do at first and tried the low carb way and on my way to losing 6 stone in six months, with achieving non diabetic Bg results. this has worked for me and I'll carry on until they invent some magic pill. I don't live in Birmingham from one of your previous threads but not far. All the best mate.

I am suprised they diagnosed you as being diabetic with a level of 6.8 that is what mine was and has been for the last two years but still told I am not yet diabetic.That it had to be 2 tests 2 weeks apart of 7 and over before it is T2 so I am just on a low fat no white carbs no sugar diet

Hi Steve, portion control,carb intake are very important in managing T2 + excercise. I am newly dx and i test 2 hours after eating something new so i can see if the food effects my BG levels. I use an excel spread sheet that i have created to log all my activities to do with managing the T2. As well as a log sheet there is a built in Hbac1 converter plus a drop down list of over 350 food types with carb data plus a drop down glycemic index list.
