Canadian Diebetes. can you believe this

How is your cardiovascular system?
Now it is great. I had a quintuplet bypass last December. I had no symptoms at all. I felt great and was on BP meds. J wouldn't have caught the blockages based on symptoms. I walked around Boston in 90degree weather and only got tired. No chest pain ever. When the Doctor told me I thought he was joking.

Tom sounding like my dad and living life confidently the way he likes. Fearless mind-set is important and at the same time healthy diet combined with moderate exercise [as permitted by specialist docs] is also essential.

My dad has T2D, Hypertension since last 30 years, and he has great support to live. Stopped driving long ago [cannot see properly due to T2D - but he won't admit that openly]; does not have to cook, does not have to work. He has his surplus savings, living with a large family with grandsons and daughters etc. His cardio system has improved significantly after his bypass procedure last year. He is a strong believer of medication, just like Tom.

But my wish is that he controls his diet [likes to eat rice + spicy curries everyday] and goes for a walk; and thus avoids cutting down so many tablets everyday. But, he won't care. After all, he is my dad, I argue sometimes only to give up at the end!

I eat a lot of curries. I can't eat the hottest anymore . I ate curries so hot they killed the skin in your mouth.

I also eat a lot of Mexican . I was an importer, exporter from Mexico, Philippines, Hong Kong and other places for years. I ate a lot Of different foods.

Hi the medical prof. are trained to treat every ailment with medication not to look at the causes, also not forgetting the incentives from the pharm. companies for doctors etc to prescribe their medication

Alastair

All my meds cost 10 dollars a month.

Canada has a health system where the bulk of the cost is picked up by the state - presumably paid for by fellow Canadians.

You have already talked about heart issues, a heart operation, oral and insulin medication, appointments with specialists. You say that you have had T2 for decades.

Someone is bearing the cost of all this.

The same is happening here. Hundreds of thousands of people being told to carry on life as normal, eat what they like, medicate to compensate, operate, amputate, and ignore the consequences. The ignorance and short sightedness on the part of the authorities simply beggars belief.

One of those consequences has been a recent newspaper article about how type 2 diabetes is going to bankrupt our UK National Health Service in the next few decades.

I was a tax payer who paid for those people like me, in fact I paid a premium based on income. The state is the taxpayers like myself. You can look at it as preparing or speeding the burden based on ability to pay.
Canada has a Universal healthcare not free. As a senior I pay 100 every year plus 4.11 cents per 3 month perscription. Our country ran a surplus while Harper was in power but each province provides it's own healthcare system.
Our Finance Minister is now your Finance Minister.
Yes Your country has always had issues. When I lived there as a student, I worked at Harrods and we had to work an extra half hour without pay to help the economy.
Believe me, Canada is a great place to live but nothing is free. I paid taxes for 50 years, paid all my drugs etc until I turned 65. Any. drugs covered by the senior plan must be approved by the province.
I was never in the Hospital over night until my bypass . Our super regional hospital is 2 years old paid by taxpayers. Has the best Of everything.

Curiously, I hear different things from some of the Canadian Snow Birds we meet in the tropics, in winter months. They tend to relate tales of not being able to register with a doctor and having to continually use walk in centres. One particular lady is now 94 years of age, and her husband was a paediatric consultant for his working life, so it's likely that they paid their fair share of contributions.

I'm pleased it all works terribly well for you. I'm sure your fellow Canukes think your approach is heart warming.

There definitely was a Doctor shortage a few years ago. My Doctor for 29 years retired a couple years ago. I had a choice of several Doctors.
Many Doctors leave and go to the US where they can make better money. Most Of my Doctors complain about only making 500,000 a year. The Ontario gov't is brutal on doctors. One year they clawed back all income over a certain amount.
I can tell you my surgery was amazing The nurses treated me like I was in a 5 star hotel.

Oh, this shortage is current, according MrsM, and others.

I had no problem at all. There was a list on the internet Of doctors taking patients so I researched each one I was interested in. Took less than 2 hrs to pick one from atleast 10 local options.
Which province are they from? I'm from Ontario.

As is the particular lady I am thinking of. Her nearest city is Toronto.

Yes, correct with a minor correction. It would not take decades, as it is a happening story currently. It is not just T2D, there are whole lot of issues for the failure. Just google yourself, to understand state of affairs of NHS. See the links below:

1. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...wo-weeks-notice-not-receive-December-pay.html [Dec 14, 2015]

2. http://www.nhsforsale.info/database/impact-database/staffing-problems.html [gives a date-wise update on various issues related problems with NHS]

As a person assisting one young researcher on this topic, I would not write much here; but the point is NHS failed itself as a system. This is a known fact.

my youngest daughter lives in TO and she had no problem. She is having his 1st child this month and had to get a doctor. I don't understand how anyone would have a problem especially in TO.

I said her nearest city is Toronto, not that she lives in Toronto, but that doesn't really matter.

Having spent a large part of last night helping my best friend recover from a hypo, I do not want to use insulin to control my own diabetes, if I can avoid it,

I am T2D, so I have a choice, and if that means cutting down on things in my diet, then I am happy to do so. I find it easy to do this since the alternative is unacceptable for me. Also,I find it easier to get my head around, not having to calorie count, or carb count in order to set my bolus levels. At my age I prefer to use my brain for more worthwhile things.

I can also do my diet without without stressing out about it, and so I find I am quite relaxed about it, It is working for me, I am also reducing my meds, thus saving our healthcare system some money. Yes, I get strips for self monitoring on the NHS, but then this is no different than if I was on insulin. This cost would still need to be met either way. I also need less support / training from my care team, which is another saving.

You know what they say about what you read!
There are lots Of doctors in TO or the GTA. Is 12% GDP too much for health care?
Fact is the wealthy pay a lot Of our health care while the poor pay nothing. I did a search for doctors taking New patients and there were lots just like when I had to find one a couple years ago.
You really do have to be careful what you read.
2 klms from me there is a brand New super hospital replacing 2 older ones which I thought was questionable. If our health care is under stress why would they do that?
You will always have negative stories which are usually BS.

How low was it? Going on insulin is the best thing I ever did to control my diabetes. I've had 4 hypos in 2 years and I just took a few glucose pills or candy.
I check my BG 5 or more times a day. After a while you become very proficient at using the correct dosage.

Tom may be on to something. Why worry about lifestyle changes to prevent or mitigate chronic and acute diseases when all the symptoms can just be treated or managed at great expense? If you lose a foot to diabetes, they'll make you a custom prosthetic. Get heart disease from elevated insulin levels? Get a triple bypass. Go blind? Get a seeing eye dog and learn braille. Kidney failure? Dialysis. Liver failure? Transplant. Cancer from smoking? Chemotherapy/radiation. Brilliant!

Hen did I become an advocate Of a poor diet? My breakfast was a banana and 2 fruit Zero yogurts .
Explain how a middle aged man who runs 10 marathons a year had bypass surgury? He was the picture of health. Do you know how many athletes have diabetes and health issues?
There are no magic solutions to health.
My 1st wife didn't drink or smoke. Not an ounce of fat and died from cancer at 30.
I can go on a rabbit diet and not have elevated BG but that is unrealistic.

Why pancreases stop producing enough insulin is a big question. I'm not sure it has anything to do with diet.
