Can't control sugar levels after sickness bug

I'm asking for advice on behalf of my partner.
He has had type 2 diabetes for 4 years and it's controlled by metformin and gliclazide. Once daily a injection pen called lyxumia 20mcg.

He's had a tummy bug for 48 hours therefore been unable to eat or take medication. Today is day 3 and although he's not got symptoms of the sickness bug he is feeling rotten because of his diabetes.

This morning his glucose sugar levels were the highest they have ever been at 18.
He had a banana to eat because I've heard the potassium helps bind stools up but now he's feeling even worse! I know bananas has some sugar in so maybe he's now had too much sugar! I did get him to finger prick test himself before he went to bed and it's 15.2

He has informed me he's taken 3 gliclazide and 2 metformin. He can't take more metformin as it upsets his tummy too much. Is there anything else we should be doing? He doesn't want me to call 111 as there as useless as a chocolate teapot! Should I? Will he be ok if just left? She he force food down ? More medication?! I'm clueless

A banana is about 20 percent carbs. If you have any doubts about a food just Goole or whatever your preferred search engine is, type in 'carb count of ....' and it will show you everything you need to know.
Be sure to keep up his fluids. A mug of boiled water with a tiny sliver of lemon in it for him to sip might help settle his stomach. If he feels like eating then perhaps scrambled egg with a little grated cheese, but no more carbs until his BG is down.

medication don´t help much .... it is important to eat less sugary foods.. but if he can´t eat much , maybe he should not eat...
when ill the body by itself do raise ones blood glucose ... maybe because evolution made it like that as many can actually not eat when being ill... no-one dies from not eating for a few days, and it seems he is not in danger of getting too low anyways... so give him something to drink... diet coke and maybe some salted peanuts if he can eat them...

but if getting very worried do phone a doctor and get some help and information..

a banana is about 90% carbs but only about 23 grams pro 100 grams ... as most of the rest is water,which doesn´t count

His sickness bug will have caused his blood sugar levels to rise. I'm afraid this is normal. The last thing to give him when his levels are high is any carbohydrate - and a banana is about the worst thing. Eggs, cheese, fish, meat, and veggies that grow above the ground are best. Avoid fruit, bread, rice, pasta, cereals, potatoes and flour until his levels return to normal. A banana is best saved until his levels go very low. He needs to finger prick test very regularly until his levels have stabilised at his normal levels.
 
Bluetit1802 what foods do u suggest he could attempt to eat. ?

it can if we are talking of the collected amount of calories which contains of proteins, carbohydrates and fats , those 3 together makes 100% of calories, water doesn´t count

Carbohydrates 22.84 g
Fat 0.33 g
Protein 1.09 g

carbs+ proteins+fat = 100% of energy intake

Hi, has your partner been sick or ill before and what did he do then to try and control his diabetes then, unfortunately BS do go up when ill.

then maybe it is time to call your doctor... as catherinecherub here above has linked, there seem to be a guideline of what to do when being ill in the UK, I didn´t know that as comming from Denmark , but I think you should read it and follow those guidelines... but it seems maybe to be a good idea already now to phone a doctor and get soome professional guidance... it is the best to stop metformin the guideline says if one has diarrea .... and maybe up ones insuline a tiny bit if one is on insuline

It depends on the size of the banana and how ripe it is. A very small banana, 10 carbs and increasing with size.

What about some sugar free jelly's, or some raspberries or strawberries or some homemade soup or eggs, if he can tolerate these foods ? @jameela79@

Do read the guidance @catherinecherub has linked to above. It contains useful information and guidance on when to seek help.

I hope your partner feels better soon. Tummy bugs are particularly nasty with diabetes.

Made an omelette for him he did eat it but now the diarrhoea has returned!

Not really been this ill before! Minor colds that's it. This has totally knocked him for six xx

Thanknu for ur help and suggestions. I made an omelette for him. See what happens!
