hi ,
i am newly diagnosed as type 1 diabetes and am trying to get my head around all the changes i need to make. my query is do i need to have carbs with every meal or can i have meals free from them.

Sorry to hear about your new diagnosis. The answer to your question is of course you can eat meals without carbs. In those situations, assuming you are on a basal-bolus regime (i.e you have long acting and short acting insulins), you generally will skip or just have a very small dose of short acting. Have you looked into carb counting to work out your insulin ratios?

Welcome to the forum @oggey4

If your on a basal/bolus insulin regime then you can be more flexible around mealtimes and have a carb -free meal should you choose, as you are newly diagnosed you may even get away with not bolusing for the meal but your postprandial bg levels will determine this.

I agree with pinewood that you should try and get your head around carb counting and adjusting your insulin first then experiment with carb-free meals.

Welcome @oggey4

I agree with above comments too. There are many things to take on board when newly diagnosed. The important things in the early stages are checking your glucose regularly (wake up, before meals, two hours after meals and bedtime), and getting used to taking injections and adjusting to the new routine in your life. I was diagnosed April so that routine comes pretty quickly I can assure you. Hope this helps.

If youre newly diagnosed then I assume you must be on fixed doses? If so, you may find that having a low carb meal may put you into hypo if you take the amount of insulin you've been advised. If you would like to try some low carb meals there's nothing wrong with that, but I'd definitely advise speaking to your DSN about adjusting your insulin accordingly. Best of luck

Hi, welcome and agree with others.

Speak to DSN about being able to change your bolys's according to the carbs you eat.

If you ate only 1 meal, 2 meals or 6 meals prediagnosis there us no reason why you cannot remain doing the same.

If you ate or wish to eat less carbs now then its just a case of understanding how to do so.

I eat just 1 meal a day. Today has been duck (as in meat) and a quail egg psalad, walnuts and 2 sq dark choc. Lowish carbs and just one meal. I will have my flax n chia seeds in a mug of milk later. I've ate this way probably since 12 years old and diabetes (for 30+ years) has been managed. Only once has any consultant or other persons told me to eat carbs as in porridge n toast and I tried thinking they knew best. I ballooned from a size 8 up to a size 12 (going on size 14). Thankfully only done this once... And the advice was badly wrong and definitely not right for me.

Always done it. Never feel hungry because its what I'm used to. I work as a gardener and also go to the gym. Even before my gardening 10 years ago I was the most active walker managing a huge distribution centre walking about 12000 steps a shift. My current steps is averaging 11745 a day.

From the age of 12 (confession time here) ...... I used to save my dinner money at school and skip my meals, also used to skip breakfast. My dad unknowingly fed me my 1st meal of the day at 4.30pm each. So its always been my living really.

I think also because of my slow colonic transit as well that I feel full constantly. I don't think its all because of way I lived when young. I have no appetite and unless my hubby fed me or prepared my meals and left them for me then honestly I have no inclination at all to eat.

Having diabetes so long doesn't make me know what I'm doing-lol. When I came iff pump and back to MDI I struggled. Only thanks to Tim2000s and robert72 that I could get my one meal a day back in place on mdi as 5 years from being on a pump I didn't know how to split doses or qtys when nurse told me one jab of 20... These guys helped me so much and splitting doses has allowed me not to have to force feed carbs when I literally do not want to eat.
