Carbs

I have been a bit more conscious about carbs since joining this forum, but I can't quite get to grips of how to work out if it is good or bad for me. I am T2
For example I bought some uncle bens whole grain rice,
The carbohydrate is 30.7grams per 100 grams of which there is 0.2 grams of sugar. I can see the sugar content is very low but what about the seemingly high carb content, can anyone help explain please.

You look at carbohydrate content and ignore sugar. Carbohydrates affect sugar levels (sugar is just type of carbohydrate).
Anything like rice, pasta, potatoes, bread is high in carbs. Basically anything starchy or made of flour. Do you have meter to test after meals? That would be best as you would know what you can eat or not. Some people are ok with brown rice or pasta, wholegrain products. Have a look at GI its quite useful to know

hi, im not sure what your question is mate? are they high in carbs? yep, should you eat them? nope

even the anti low carbers would probly agree to cutting down on RICE, potatoes, pasta and bread

so if your trying to reduce your carbs the smallest amount of rice would be preferable, but brown rice would be much better (less processed) or like me dont have it at all, maybe try some fake rice (cauliflower rice)

Yes I have a meter and I'm maintaining my BS at between 5 and 7 after eating rice or potatoes as part of a meal
I am new to all this Andy and trying to establish what amount of carbohydrate would be classed as low, the rice was an example.
Thanks

hmmmm, well if your levels are good eating that stuff i guess its ok :) i do also believe there are many other health benefits to reducing carbs but from a diabetic point of view its all about the numbers :)

the absolute number of carbs each of us can tolerate is different for each person so no one can tell you how many to have unfortunatly, its why we have to test, i wished i could eat rice or potatoes and not get high bgs, so enjoy i suppose

Everyone's different.

If you can tolerate carbs, unprocessed food is still normally a better option.
Low GI, then the carbs are digested more slowly.

So brown rice is better than white rice. Which is probably why you're getting good figures.

Low GL is also better, ie, a small amount of rice as part of a larger meal, so the rice again is absorbed slowly.

Classic healthy food, brown rice, veg, is always better than refined food.

I've just started carb counting and am learning as I go......

A couple of things I noticed for me, include stopping eating some foods I used to have. Tomato soup is now out for me, 12g of carb per 1/2 can but 9g of that was sugar & therefore I was having a hypo before my next meal time.

Cashew nut / peanuts are also gone (not that I had these v often) I don't know why but again hypo's were more common after eating these foods.

Re the OP question It's not a concern for me at the moment, when I master my carb/insulin ratio & adjustment insulin ratio I will look to reduce & try to get back in an exercise regime.
