Hi I am recovering from covid and my blood sugar is going above 14/15 at times.

I am using care sens dual and it shows the word ketones.

Someone mentioned this is just a suggestion for testing for ketones and not saying they are there.

Do I need separate strips any way to measure for ketones.

Also how long would you expect a high sugar read for after illness such a covid.

I’m on week 3 and still feeling weak etc

Thank you

I can’t comment on whether you should test for ketones or at what level but yes the machine is suggesting you maybe should. However I used to use a Caresens Dual and you do need ketone specific strips.

I'm sorry you're feeling so unwell and yes you need ketosens strips to test for ketones.

As you can see from the above, they aren't cheap. My New Zealand doctor prescribes me 1 pack of ten every 3 months on the understanding I use them if ill. And yes, @Rachox is right, the suggestion to test for ketones is just because your blood sugar is quite high, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have them. T1s on insulin are at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis when they have high blood sugars, because of lack of insulin.

You can also buy urine testing strips for ketones, which are cheaper. Be aware that if you are on a low carb diet you can have low levels of ketones from dietary ketosis.

In your position, I might ring up my GP or DN for advice, as 3 weeks seems like quite a long time to be struggling with high blood sugars, though unfortunately illness does push your levels up so it's not necessarily surprising.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you so much for the information, that’s a relief as I thought I had ketones. Phew
